PhD: Synchrotron Diffraction Studies on Stability of Individual Grains in Steel TU Delft

The Department of Radiation, Radionuclides and Reactors (www.rrr.tudelft.nl) is located in the Reactor Institute Delft (RID). The department’s common focus is nuclear radiation and reactions. Although its areas of interest are varied, from materials, sensors and instrumentation, to energy, sustainable production and health, all the department’s research is related to radiation in some way. In experimental research, extensive use is made of the research facilities of the Reactor Institute Delft as well as of large, international research facilities.

The FAME section (www.rrr.tudelft.nl/fame) performs research on functional and structural materials, aimed at practical applications. The focus is on the study of the relations between structure, dynamics and function at the atomic and nanoscale. For this we use neutrons, positrons, X-rays, NMR, muons, Mossbauer spectroscopy and first principles modelling, at both local (RID) and international facilities.

JOB DESCRIPTION

TRansformation-Induced Plasticity (TRIP) steels are a class of advanced multiphase steels that show a promising combination of strength and formability for automotive applications. This outstanding combination of mechanical properties originates from the martensitic transformation of a metastable (austenite) phase induced by applied stress and/or cooling. The aim of the project is to correlate for the first time the stability of the metastable phase to all the relevant local microstructural properties for individual transforming grains.

In this project we will perform state-of-the-art micro-beam diffraction measurements with high energy X-rays produced at a synchrotron source, to monitor simultaneously the stability of a large number of individual metastable grains within the complex multiphase TRIP microstructure during deformation. The experiments will be performed at the 3DXRD microscope of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in France with a dedicated micro-tensile tester. The measurements will be analysed in detail to obtain quantitative relationships between the mechanical stability of the metastable grains and the local microstructural parameters. The obtained results will be directly implemented in modern, multiscale micromechanical models for TRIP steel behaviour. The project is funded by the Dutch Materials Innovation Institute (www.m2i.nl)

REQUIREMENTS

We seek candidates with a Master degree in physics, chemistry or materials science. Experience in the field of crystallography and good computational skills are desirable. Good English writing and speaking skills are required. The position will be for a fixed term of four years.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The successful candidate will be employed full-time by TU Delft for a fixed period of 4 years within which he or she is expected to write a dissertation leading to a doctoral degree (PhD thesis). The starting salary for a PhD is €2042 gross per month increasing to a maximum of € 2612 gross per month in the fourth year. TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of assembling a customized compensation and benefits package (the 'IKA'). Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Delft University of Technology strives to increase the number of women in higher academic positions; women are therefore especially encouraged to apply.

PhD Project: The Ultimate Scintillator TU Delft

The Department of Radiation, Radionuclides and Reactors (www.rrr.tudelft.nl) is located in the Reactor Institute Delft (RID). The department’s common focus is nuclear radiation and reactions. Although its areas of interest are varied, from materials, sensors and instrumentation, to energy, sustainable production and health, all the department’s research is related to radiation in some way. In experimental research, extensive use is made of the research facilities of the Reactor Institute Delft as well as of large, international research facilities. The Radiation Detection & Matter (RD&M) section conducts intensive research on the physics of light-emitting inorganic semiconducting or insulating materials. Our main expertise concerns the light emission of lanthanide impurities. Through many years of applied and fundamental research on scintillators, lamp and display phosphors, and afterglow and storage phosphors, general models have been developed in our section that explain and predict observed phenomena. This has resulted in the invention of exciting new scintillators like LaBr3:Ce3+ that are now commercially available and applied in radiation detection instruments for
space exploration and medical diagnostics. Our models also allow for the design of new lanthanide-based photonic materials.

JOB DESCRIPTION

You will perform applied and fundamental research on luminescent materials with the aim to develop new compounds that possess even better scintillation properties than LaBr3:Ce. Inorganic crystals or powders will be synthesized by experts on crystal growth and materials synthesis elsewhere. Your task is to study the luminescence and scintillation properties of these new materials with dedicated experimental techniques in our own laboratory or at facilities abroad.

REQUIREMENTS

The section seeks a PhD student, preferably with a degree in experimental solid state physics. The results should be presented in scientific journals and at international conferences. Delft University of Technology is a bilingual organisation; a good command of English (written and spoken) is essential.

PhD Student: Thermal Aspects of High Precision Inkjet Printing TU Delft

The 3ME Faculty trains committed engineering students and PhD candidates in groundbreaking scientific research in the fields of mechanical, maritime and materials engineering. The research within the Precision and Microsystems Engineering (PME) department is focused on developing the knowledge and technology for the realization of small devices and systems, including microsystems and microelectronics. This is a domain which has strong international industrial players in the Netherlands. The systems and products realized by the precision technology industry are driven by fast and focused performance advancement in terms of miniaturization and function density, improved precision and speed, and improved reliability. We believe that microsystems and their use in and integration with larger scale systems play an essential role in this performance driven domain. Within the Mechatronic System Design section, three main research areas are being developed: high precision positioning systems, micro- and opto-mechatronics and metrology. We aim to combine high quality research and
education, in order to provide both innovative design solutions and high quality engineers to the world-leading Dutch precision and mechatronic industry. The research within the programme is performed in close cooperation with partners within PME, DCMM and industry.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Funded by the Dutch government and industry partners, the HiPrins research project will push high-precision inkjet printing to new application fields and to new levels of accuracy.
We are looking for a PhD student to work on one of the work packages in this project: The study of thermal effects on the accuracy of inkjet printing of electronic circuits.
Initially, you will be studying etch-resistant printing on printed circuit boards of 0.5 x 0.5 metres. The ink used in this process is a hot-melt. The use of high temperature drops in a high-precision environment poses some interesting design challenges: How does one account for the thermal strain in the substrate? How does one maximize printing accuracy taking this thermal strain into account? What is the most efficient method to transport the heat from the printing area? In order to answer these questions, a combination of experimental research and multiphysics modelling will be required.
The carrier for your research will be Lunaris, an inkjet printing test-bed constructed by printer manufacturer OCE together with precision machine designer NTS. You will spend most of your time at the inkjet application centre of the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, where Lunaris is located.

REQUIREMENTS

This research combines experimental and theoretical/numerical aspects; we are therefore looking for a mechanical engineering PhD student who has a proven affinity for both.
Candidates for this project should have a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering as well as good analytical and communication skills.
Delft University of Technology is a bilingual organization; a good command of English (written and spoken) is essential; a good command of Dutch as well is preferred.
Keywords: mechatronics, engineering dynamics, multi-physics modelling, experimental research, mechanical design.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of assembling a customized compensation and benefits package (the 'IKA'). Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

APPLICATION

To apply, please send a detailed CV, references and a publication list along with a letter of application by 1 April, 2009 to Prof. Ir. R.H. Munnig Schmidt at: Application-3mE@tudelft.nl.

PhD in The Impact of Enterprise Performance Management on Management Control Oxford Brookes University

Enterprise Performance Management (EPM), also known as Business Performance Management (BPM), integrates ideas from Performance Management with Business Intelligence and Information Management. An important aspect of EPM is the – real-time – monitoring of actual performance against targets, based on data from the business processes and their outcomes. When organisations apply EPM, ubiquitous availability of real-time (and accurate) performance data would, in principle, allow for more ‘democratic’ or empowering control approaches to be employed. This would not just free up management time and make organisations more responsive, it would also respond to long-standing calls to curtail the use of formal, centralised management control approaches. Do EPM Systems in practice really change management control towards more democratic methods?

PhD in Leadership in learning and teaching in Higher Education

Assessment and feedback are fundamental to student learning: without feedback, students' ability to understand complex concepts or to develop academic skills is likely to be very limited. However, students can experience difficulties and frustrations as they transition from a relatively didactic pedagogy at school to more discursive and developmental pedagogies which are common in higher education. One area which can be particularly difficult for students is in the changing nature of assessment and feedback. Proposals which focus on an investigation of student engagement with assessment and feedback are welcomed. Possible topics include: a longitudinal study of students' experiences as they transition from school to higher education, and throughout their university experience; the phenomenological exploration of different forms of engagement, and how engagement changes over time; and the influence of students' social networks on their engagement with assessment and feedback. Proposals should build on the work of the ASKe Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Brookes, and the FDTL
feedback project. Applicants are invited to view information at http://www.business.brookes.ac.uk/learningandteaching/aske/ and https://mw.brookes.ac.uk/display/eswaf/Home

2 PhD funded Studentships on Philosophy

2 PhD funded Studentships
Project on the Phenomenal Qualities
Department of Philosophy

The University of Hertfordshire invites applications for two full-time doctoral studentships, as part of an AHRC funded three-year research project running at the University of Hertfordshire under the leadership of Professor Paul Coates, to study the nature of phenomenal qualities.

The studentships are for three years full-time study, fully funded at the current AHRC rate of £12,940 per annum, plus fees, starting on October 1st 2009.

The Project focuses upon the cognitive role and ontological nature of phenomenal qualities, and in particular upon their relation to the physical world. It will examine both the "objective" and the "subjective" dimensions of phenomenal qualities as they occur in experiences. One branch of the Project concerns the role that phenomenal qualities play in perception: it will investigate whether they are best understood as intrinsic properties of inner experiences, or alternatively, should be construed as the manifest properties of perceived objects. The second branch of the Project concerns the metaphysics of phenomenal qualities and the philosophy of mind: in particular, it will involve an investigation of the prospects for integrating such qualities within a broadly physicalistic worldview (each branch will be broadly construed, and we accept that there may be some overlap between the areas of investigation).

The Project is a large and ambitious one, involving a worldwide network of leading researchers in philosophy of mind/perception, and will include a high-profile lecture series, seminars, and two workshops, leading up to a major international conference on phenomenal qualities in 2011/12. Successful applicants, therefore, can look forward to being part of a rich and vibrant research community, at the cutting-edge of its discipline.

We seek one PhD student to study full-time within the first branch identified above, on a topic connected with phenomenal qualities and perception, and a second PhD student to study full-time on the topic of phenomenal qualities as this relates to issues in metaphysics and the philosophy of mind. They will be supervised by Professor Coates and by Dr Coleman respectively. Professors Shaun Gallagher and Anthony Marcel will also be on the supervision teams.

Requirements:

Successful applicants will normally be expected to have a 1st class or good Upper 2nd class Honours degree in Philosophy, and also a Masters degree in Philosophy (or be approaching completion of a Masters degree), or the equivalent. Applicants must meet the Residence Eligibility conditions for AHRC awards. They will be expected to play an active role within the research activities organised in the Project.

Applications should include a CV, references from two academic referees, and a summary of your research proposal (max. 500 words). For application forms and details of how to apply please contact:

j.1.turner@herts.ac.uk, or write to Janice Turner, Phenomenal Qualities Project, SSAHRI, University of Hertfordshire, College Lane, AL10 9AB.

For further information about the Studentships you are advised to contact either Paul Coates (P.Coates@herts.ac.uk) or Sam Coleman (S.Coleman@herts.ac.uk). Information about the AHRC funded Project, The Nature of Phenomenal Qualities, is available at: www.paulcoates.net.

Post-Master and Postdoc positions at ORNL, USA

About the Program
http://www.orau.gov/orise/edu/ornl/ornl-pdpm/about.htm

Current openings:
http://www.orau.gov/orise/edu/ornl/postneeds.htm

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) multiprogram, nonweapons national laboratories with a staff of 4,000 scientists, engineers, and other professional, technical, and support personnel.

In support of its primary missions in energy and the environment, ORNL maintains a strong commitment to both basic and applied science and their engineering applications. This research advances fundamental knowledge while providing a foundation for the major scientific and technological development efforts that are carried out for DOE and other federal and nonfederal sponsors.

To extend the nation's capabilities in key areas of science and technology, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) proposes major initiatives in:

Neutron sciences
Complex biological systems
Terascale computing and simulation science
Energy and environmental systems of the future
Advanced materials
National security

Program History

Early in 1992, ORNL announced new and expanded Postdoctoral Research Associates and Postmaster's Programs. This action further strengthened the laboratory's long-standing commitment to excellence in research while contributing to the development of the new MS and Ph.D. scientists and engineers on whom the future of the nation's research and development enterprise depends.

Program Description and Goals

The ORNL Postdoctoral Research Associates and Postmaster's Research Participation Program are highly selective programs and offer challenging opportunities to recent recipients of doctoral and master's degrees to conduct research in areas that support ORNL missions in the basic and applied sciences, energy, and environment. Appointments are available in all current research and development programs at the laboratory. For more information, visit www.ornl.gov and click on Science and Technology.

The program's goals are to:

Advance scientific and technical training in areas of critical national need

Provide research opportunities for outstanding scientists
Promote the influx of new ideas and skills into the laboratory
Enhance interactions with the wider academic and research communities
The emphasis on a research mentoring approach allows postdoctoral and postmaster's appointees to become integral members of ORNL research and development teams. They gain exposure to current national issues in science and technology, have an opportunity to share and exchange innovative ideas and techniques, and make significant contributions to ORNL programs. Depending on the nature of research and availability of funding, postdoctoral and postmaster's researchers are encouraged to publish and present research findings and write funding proposals as part of a research team to enhance their own professional development. The interaction of ideas, skills, approaches, and technologies will be of mutual benefit to the fellow and ORNL.

Since the programs' inception in 1992, hundreds of postdoctoral and postmaster's researchers have launched successful careers from their appointments, many of whom have achieved national and/or international recognition. A significant percentage of participants gain permanent employment as a result of their experience in the ORNL Programs.

These programs are administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) for ORNL. ORAU is part of the UT-Battelle partnership that operates ORNL. Appointees become full-time temporary employees of ORAU and are eligible for a variety of benefits.

Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) is a university consortium leveraging the scientific strength of major research institutions to advance science and education by partnering with national laboratories, government agencies, and private industry. ORAU manages the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for the U.S. Department of Energy.

School of Mechanical Engineering

Value of Award:

Maintenance Stipend for a maximum period of 3 years (£12,940 for Session 2008/09), full overseas rate fees and a Research Training Support Grant

Number Available: One

Closing Date: Extended to 15 April 2009

Minimum Academic Requirements: A very good first degree (equivalent to a UK first class honours degree) from a prestigious institution in a relevant discipline such as Engineering, Mathematics or Physics (a lower rated BSc with a Masters will not normally be accepted as the equivalent of a UK first class honours degree). Candidates must also meet the University's English language requirements.

Additional Information: The Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards are a national initiative to bring outstanding students from India, Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Russia, South Africa and the developing world to the UK to study for PhD degrees in top-rated research environments. The eligible countries are those listed in Part 1 on the OECD website: http://www.oecd.org/dataoecd/35/9/2488552.pdf

This award is provided by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Council (www.epsrc.ac.uk) and MAHLE Powertrain Ltd (www.mahle-powertrain.com) and is available for a research project in the area of:

Turbo-charged engines research

Spark Ignition engine downsizing, through the use of high boost pressures (turbocharging) has significant impact on engine efficiency/CO2 emissions. However, at present there is inadequate knowledge of the burn rate and auto-ignition/knock characteristics at such conditions. This is particularly so for potential second generation biofuels (e.g. ethanol and butanol blends). The study will provide necessary knowledge by employing unique high pressure/temperature/optical access fan-stirred combustion vessels and optically accessed engines. Experimental work will be backed up by theoretical analysis of combustion rates and instabilities.
