Overview
GRADUATE STUDENT IN MATHEMATICS at the Division of Applied Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics at Linköping University and with Vladimir Kozlov as main supervisor

Research area
The student will work on an interdisciplinary project on study of quantum scattering and conductivity in novel super material graphene aiming at better understanding of the relation between microscopic properties of this material and its macroscopic observed characteristics. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with Igor Zozoulenko (ITN).

Duties
The duties consist of graduate studies and tutorial teaching at most 20 percent of the total work time.


Qualifications
Applicants should have a degree on advanced level with at least 60 ECTS credits in mathematics or other subjects with a strong mathematics content.

Appointment procedure
When evaluating applications, the ability to conduct postgraduate studies will be considered primarily.

Overview
Project 7: How do wood-feeding insects digest their diet? Supervisors: Prof. Jonathan Gershenzon, Dr. Axel Schmidt, Dr. Martin Kaltenpoth, MPI-CE

Wood-feeding insects are sometimes known to use microbial symbionts present in their guts to help in digestion and nutrient mobilization. However, nothing is known about how such insects cope with wood and resin. The large pine weevil, Hylobius abietis, is a serious pest on the bark of young conifer trees in northern Europe that must deal with both wood fiber and terpene-containing resin as major parts of its diet. This project will explore the metabolic fate of resin terpenes in these insects and the role of gut bacteria in processing terpenes and wood at the molecular, protein and metabolite levels. The project combines entomological, microbiological, chemical and molecular biology methods to better understand the lifestyle of one fascinating, long-lived species of insect. Collaboration between Research Group on Insect Symbiosis (Dr. Martin Kaltenpoth) and Department of Biochemistry (Dr. Axel Schmidt).

The project will be part of the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) “The Exploration of Ecological Interactions with Molecular and Chemical Techniques” in Jena, Germany. Students holding a Master`s degree (or equivalent) in molecular biology, ecology, entomology, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry and neuroethology, with a proven record of success in one of the disciplines and interest in examining ecological interactions, are eligible to conduct a doctoral project within the IMPRS.

The Research School is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, Friedrich Schiller University, Jena, the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology, and the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research. Overview

Project 6: Legume chemistry and the specificity of pea aphid host races
Supervisors: Prof. Jonathan Gershenzon, Dr. Grit Kunert

The pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), is actually a complex of distinct races that each live on a different group of legume species. Some live on several species, while others live on a single species or just a few. This ecological specialization can be considered as one of the first steps towards sympatric speciation since the host fidelity of races leads to assortative mating which reduces gene flow between host-races. The aim of this project is to identify plant chemical compounds that are responsible for the pattern of host plant usage by pea aphid races and test their involvement in ecological and evolutionary processes. We are seeking: a highly motivated Ph.D. candidate with some background in analytical chemistry, biochemistry or chemical ecology. The candidate should be strongly interested in interdisciplinary research questions. (Project leader: Grit Kunert).

The Ph.D. in Innovative Technologies of Information & Communication Engineering and Robotics is a three-year residential program with highly interdisciplinary connotation, where students can specialize in one of the following curricula:

MALAYSIA INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP (MIS) MINISTRY OF HIGHER EDUCATION MALAYSIA 2011



The Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS) is an initiative by the Malaysian Government to attract the best brain from around the world to pursue advanced academic studies in Malaysia. This scholarship aims to support Malaysian Government's effort to attract, motivate and retain talented human capital from abroad.

Talented international students with excellent academic records and outstanding co-curricular backgrounds are welcomed to apply for this scholarship and further their studies in any selected and well-established Malaysian public and private universities.
This scholarship is divided into two (2) categories of study: Postgraduate and Post-doctoral Studies

ELIGIBLITY CRITERIA [UP]



To be eligible for Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS), applicants must fit the following criteria:-

a)
Not be more than 45 years of age during application.
b)
Obtained a minimum of Second Class Upper (Honours) or a CGPA of 3.5/4.0 at Bachelor Degree Level for Masters Degree applicants and for PhD candidates must possess CGPA 3.5/4.0 or very good result at Masters degree level in a similar field of intended PhD study. In addition, for post-doctoral programme, the selection will be evaluated based on the number of books produced, refereed/non refereed journals, portfolio and patent copyright. The Post-Doctoral candidate must have excellent reputation in research and possesses knowledge related to the research to be carried out.
c)
Took one of the following English Language Proficiency Test not more than two years before the date of application. The list of tests and minimum scores required:
- IELTS Academic Test with a score of at least 6.5; or
- TOEFL paper-based test with a score of at least 580 or computer-based test with a score of at least 230 or internet-based test with a score at least 92.
d)
In excellent health condition and certified by a Certified Doctor/Medical Professional. The cost of medical examination is to be borne by the applicants
e)
Wrote a proposal that is relevant to the needs and interests of Malaysia (research-based programme only)
f)
Has applied for and gained admission to postgraduate and post-doctoral studies in Malaysia (conditional letters of offer will be accepted at the time of application or has a confirmation of acceptance or affiliation with the universities in Malaysia).

Scholarship holders must not change their programme during tenure of the scholarship except with written permission from their university and the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia.
d)
Scholarship holders must follow the approved programmes and abide by the university’s rules, regulations and codes of conduct. Any suspension from the university will result in immediate suspension of award. Monthly allowances are not payable during suspension, including suspension due to illness.
e)
It is the responsibility of successful candidates to apply for and meet the requirements for the issuing of an appropriate entry visa including medical examination. The offer of the scholarship does not guarantee the granting of a visa.
f)
Scholarship holders must maintain satisfactory progress and good standing as stipulated by their host university and degree programme, or the scholarship will be withdrawn.

ICFO – The Institute of Photonic Sciences is a centre based in Castelldefels (Barcelona), devoted to the research and education of the optical and photonic sciences, at the highest international level.

ICFO is looking for a highly-motivated post-doctoral researcher to lead a project on plasmonically-enhanced optoelectronic devices based on colloidal quantum dots.
The ideal researcher should have demonstrated experience in design and fabrication of plasmonic nanostructures, hands-on expertise in advanced nanofabrication techniques (e-beam nanolithography, FIB) and strong background in physics and characterization of plasmonic structures (near-field SOM, SEM etc.).
Experience in optoelectronic device characterization will be considered an asset.

Max Planck Child Study Centre - University of Manchester: job description

The Max Planck Child Study Centre (MPCSS) invites applications for two fully-funded PhD studentships commencing in September 2011. The studentships provide three-year funding covering a tax-free stipend equating to approximately 16,000 Euros per annum plus generous support for travel and equipment. UK/EU tuition fees will also be covered.

The MPCSS, based in the School of Psychological Sciences, is part of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig. Research is focused upon children’s early language acquisition, carried out through both experimental studies and analysis of naturalistic data.


Our studentships are not tied to pre-defined projects, however the topic of the PhD must be within the field of first language development using naturalistic and/or experimental data. Our focus is on children learning either English or German although we have ongoing studies of Polish, French, Russian and Finnish. We are increasingly conducting comparative studies in different languages. We are also interested in how children learn to use pragmatically appropriate language (for example, using appropriate referring expressions) and in the relation between social cognition and language development.

Our research concerning naturalistic studies involves tracking the sources of children’s developing constructions, including transitives, questions and complex sentences as well as conducting quantitative analyses of the children’s input.

Experimental studies focus on a number of aspects of language acquisition, such as the development of general syntactic categories (such as noun and verb), constructions (such as transitives and questions) and the development of inflectional morphology. We also look at how children learn the pragmatics of language (comprehension and production of referring expressions, answering questions appropriately and registering given/new relations in an utterance).

Previous examples of PhD research conducted within the Centre include:

• How children learn to identify referents for their listeners
• Cross-linguistic comparisons of early language development
• The pragmatics and syntax of argument omission
• English pronouns and how they help children understand constructions
• Explaining children’s errors (e.g. Me do it instead of I do it, I want go there instead of I want to go there)


Our aim is to further develop constructivist approaches to language development to the point that our understanding of typically developing children’s development in English and other languages allows us to inform the many relevant applied areas such as multilingualism and bilingualism in early development, language delay and speech therapy.

There is the possibility for students to spend short periods of time in Leipzig, designing and, if appropriate, running their studies.


Typical next destinations for PhD graduates of the Centre are University lectureships and postdoctoral research fellowships, followed, in some cases, by training programmes in Clinical or Educational Psychology.

Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a minimum 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in psychology, linguistics or an associated discipline. A Masters degree in a similar area would be an advantage.

Project Description

Tibotec-Virco is currently screening for small molecule inhibitors of Dengue virus replication. Experiments will reveal whether a particular compound interacts with the initial phase of infection (binding, fusion, entry), intracellular replication, virus maturation or release. Genotyping and phenotyping of drug-resistant variants allows identification of viral protein targets. The interaction between inhibitor and target will be studied by expressing wt and mutant target proteins and determining the crystal structure of the inhibitor/target complex. This will allow rational design of second generation analogues with increased inhibitory effect.

  • The candidate should possess a MSc degree in virology, cell biology, immunology or related discipline. Good knowledge and experience of assay development and molecular biology is an advantage. Prior experience with transcriptome/proteome analyses is an asset. The ideal candidate would have a background in infectious diseases, preferably related to Dengue virus or other related RNA viruses.

Project Description:

The Environmental Sciences Division (ESD), www.esd.ornl.gov, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), www.ornl.gov, has an immediate opening for a post doctoral research associate in soil carbon dynamics.

The post-doc will have the opportunity to design, execute, and analyze bench and field-scale experiments to better understand mechanisms controlling soil organic matter protection and stabilization. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated background and interest in plant root inputs to soil organic matter (SOM) pools, soil aggregate dynamics, and physio-chemical mechanisms that regulate carbon accrual in SOM fractions that range in chemistry and residence time. Process-level knowledge gained in these investigations will be incorporated into carbon models at local to global scales.

Responsibilities include data collection and analysis, interpretation, and publication of experimental and modeling results in high-visibility journals. Work will be conducted in collaboration with others having expertise in plant and microbial science, soil chemistry, carbon cycle science, and modeling. Preference will be given to applicants who have experience and interest in integration of soil dynamics across temporal and spatial scales. The applicant will join others engaged in climate change research as part of the Consortium for Enhancing Carbon Sequestration in Terrestrial Ecosystems (CSiTE; http://csite.esd.ornl.gov). The position will be based at ORNL in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Ph.D. required in Soil Science, Biological Sciences, Environmental Science, or related field. Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.

Project Description

Tibotec-Virco is exploring novel ways to agonize and antagonize the innate immune system with small molecules and biological that impact on the replication of (+)RNA viruses. As an example, RIG-I and MDA5 are cytosolic RNA sensors that upon recognizing viral RNA initiate a signaling pathway leading to IFN production. Viruses have evolved mechanisms to counter this pathway and our interest is to understand how to modulate this pathway or the interaction itself to facilitate viral clearance. We will develop RIG-I/MDA5 expression and IFN reporter systems (GFP or luciferase) to identify small molecules that modulate the RIG-I/MDA5 pathway or that block the antagonistic activity of the viral IFN suppressors. In addition, we will use siRNA libraries to identify new nodes in the innate immune response that may influence viral replication and perhaps identify new points for pharmacological modulation.

In the FLOW (Far and Large Offshore Wind Energy) project, the Dutch offshore wind industry and research community are cooperating to realise far-offshore wind power stations. TU Delft has more than 12 PhD’s participating in the research. Cooperation between the PhD’s and with the other partners is essential. Part of the programme involves an internship with one of the FLOW partners.
This PhD research is part of the FLOW R&D programme. The research is focused on three important questions:
1) What are the representative wind conditions a far-offshore wind turbine will experience during its lifetime?
2) What do these wind conditions predict with respect to power production and loads of offshore wind farms?
3) How should these conditions correctly be described in design calculations and standards?

Requirements

The candidate should have a background in Wind Energy Engineering and/or Meteorology with a relevant MSc degree (e.g. aerospace engineering or physics). He/she should be fluent in English (spoken and written), eager to learn and comfortable with a multidisciplinary PhD topic.

The offered position is for a temporary period of 4 years (1 year and an additional 3 years after a positive performance evaluation).
