PhD Anthropology and Epistemology Scholarships at University of Bergamo, Italy

Ph.D. School in Anthropology and Epistemology of Complexity

The research activity of the Ph.D. Programme in Anthropology and Epistemology of Complexity as well as of the Centre for Research on the Anthropology and Epistemology of Complexity addresses a number of major research foci: human identity as part of a wider reflection on Nature; planetary history in a ecological perspective;ù the understanding of history and of the main changes in scientific and philosophical thinking; the analysis of globalization processes; the study of Europe; the exploration of urban and metropolitan spaces; the interest in information technologies; the reflection on the new frontiers of the sacred, violence and war.

Main research lines draw a plurality of transdisciplinary intersections showing that knowledge complexity is first of all the acknowledgment of Nature complexity, which cannot be reduced to any pre-ordinate paradigm.

Modern occidental thinking is essentially based on principles of reduction, abstraction and division re-proposing the military principle of divide et impera (divide and rule). It separated and still separates Nature processes from knowledge ones by favouring the study of minimal unites and system parts without allowing us to approach the hard understanding of solidarities, intersections and mutual implications from which such minimal unities derive as non-elementary complex elements. Disciplinary divisions and the overspecialization of academic disciplines that are still dominating our western culture show the fragmentation of our way of thinking and its consequent forms of dominance of man over man, of man over woman, as well as of man over other species and over Nature. Modern scientific tradition has bequeathed to us a schematic and reductionist way of thinking unable to conceive the complexity of Nature and human beings in its multiple dimensions at different levels.

The scientific revolutions of the XX Century - the revolution of relativity and quantum as well as of chaos and information - have shown a new possible perspective of study within contemporary sciences and the opportunity to overcome the division between human and natural sciences moving towards what is called a "New Alliance".

The challenge of complexity is to reunify what the modern thinking has contributed to divide, by showing the crucial importance of the inextricable networks of reciprocal connections among processes that have been arbitrarily separated and isolated by the modern scientific tradition. Complex thinking attempts to favour a kind of knowledge able to critically reflect upon itself, to understand its own limits and to be open to and respectful of ethnic and cultural alterities, by definitively overcoming a kind of scientific knowledge that considered itself to be absolute in order to state western superiority and legitimize its dominance as well. The understanding of complexity involves indeed a new ethic perspective that is based on novel forms of planetary and cosmic solidarity moving away from modern cultural religious, ethnic as well as gender and species differences.

The Ph.D. Programme in Anthropology and Epistemology of Complexity was launched in 2002 at the University of Bergamo within the University system planning for the three-year period 2001-2003 (D.M. 8.5.2001, art.12 – Corsi di dottorato e attività di ricerca avanzata).

Sinopsis Riset

Accurate information on myocardial motion is very important in diagnosing cardiac abnormalities since physician can early detect the cardiac abnormalities by observing its motion. Current research on cardiac motion mainly focused on the improvement of motion accuracy and only few publications reported on the quantification and interpreation of the motion. Researchers previously attempted to extract some motion properties to differentiate between normal and abnormal cardiac. However, they did not provide a complete segmental profile of cardiac motion for temporal observation. The complexity of cardiac motion and the present of speckle noise on ultrasound images also challenge researchers to perform more accurate abnormality detection. The objective of this research is to investigate robust properties of myocardial motion that can be used to assist cardiologist in diagnosing cardiac abnormality. Some steps of image processing techniques, namely motion-based image enhancement, motion estimation using enhanced optical flow, extraction of robust motion features, generation of segmental myocardial profile and accurate classification task, will be applied in this research. To validate the proposed techniques, the classification results are then compared to the manual diagnosis previously done by three or more cardiologists. At the end, this research is expected to provide new findings of myocardial motion profiles that can be easily used by physician to accurately indentify the cardiac motion abnormalities. Additionally, this research also involves postgraduate students and will produce a number of research articles for publications in renowned journals.

PHD Position in Evolvable Software Architecture at TU Delft

The Software Engineering Research Group is looking for a full-time PhD student in the COMMIT project Allegio.

Topic: Evolvable Software Architectures

Keywords: Software architecture, software evolution, sydstem complexity, interface evolution, change-impact analysis, embedded systems

Industrial practice shows that it is extremely difficult to keep improving devices by adapting and extending the embedded software. Small changes often lead to unexpected consequences, due to unknown interactions and dependencies between parts of the system. Allegio aims at defining an integrating a set of methods and techniques to support a systematic “Right by Design” component-based software design approach for complex embedded systems. This ensures that incremental changes become predictable and meet the required system qualities such as performance and safety.

The contribution of SERG/TU-Delft is on investigating means to enable "Evolvable Software Architectures" for embedded systems in the healthcare domain. This research comprises (but is not limited to):

  • Evolution of large, complex embedded systems
  • Interface complexity and quality anlysis
  • Change impact analysis and prediction
  • Executable architectural models

The research will mainly be carried out at SERG/TU Delft in close collaboration with Philips Healthcare (iXR R&D) and the Embedded Systems Institute (ESI). The research will follow an industry-as-laboratory style: actual research problems are drawn from industry and solutions are evaluated in the industrial context, here Philips Healthcare.

These positions are full-time paid research positions, 4 years fixed term (with 1 year probationary period), according to the collective labor agreement of the Dutch universities (which can be downloaded from www.vsnu.nl). TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of assembling a customized compensation and benefits package (the 'IKA'). TU Delft is an equal opportunity employer.

Requirements for candidates

  • Master’s degree in computer science or informatics
  • Excellent knowledge in software engineering and programming
  • Good communicator, strong social skills, team player
  • Independent working style
  • An excellent command of the English language is an absolute must
  • Not afraid to learn

Knowledge in software architecture, software evolution, reverse engineering and software analysis is a plus.

Application Documents

When applying, make sure to include the following documents (pdf) in English:

  • A motivational letter specifically referring to the open positions (maximum 3 pages)
  • A detailed resume (with publications, if you have any)
  • Copies of marks and degrees/certificates
  • A list of 3 references that we can contact
  • Your MSc thesis in English (or alternative if your MSc thesis is not in English, a 5-page summary of your MSc thesis in English).

Applications not containing all requested documents will not be considered.

More information?

For more information on the group, its projects and its publications, its current team members, and the software tools we build have a look at our web site: http://www.se.ewi.tudelft.nl/
