Position available - Cognitive Neuroscience Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mental Health

A postdoctoral fellowship position is available at the University of Texas at Austin, Department of Psychology and Institute for Mental Health Research to conduct research with Drs. Christopher Beevers and David Schnyer. This position is for two years with the possibility of extending the fellowship or transitioning to research faculty by mutual agreement based on job performance and funding availability. Duration and start time are negotiable. Salary is commensurate with experience and consistent with NIH guidelines.

We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow in cognitive neuroscience with strong expertise in eye tracking and EEG/ERP methods who is interested in translational research involving clinical populations. The postdoctoral fellow will contribute to a program of research that examines the etiology and treatment of depression in adults across multiple levels of analyses (behavioral, genetic, neural, environmental). Ongoing studies include dual process models of reward and punishment processing, genetic etiology of cognitive vulnerability to depression, and real-time neurofeedback attention training in depressed adults. In addition to SR Research eye-tracking and Brain Vision EEG equipment located in Dr. Beevers’ laboratory, the postdoctoral fellow will have access to other cognitive neuroscience resources at the University of Texas at Austin, including fMRI, MR compatible EEG, TMS, and MEG.

The postdoctoral fellow will primarily be responsible for designing and implementing EEG and eye tracking experiments, preparing manuscripts, contributing to grant writing, and conducting analyses following data collection. Opportunities to write manuscripts from extant datasets are plentiful. Some staff supervision will also be expected. The fellow will have advisors with expertise in psychopathology, cognitive neuroscience, and grant writing. Individuals with a PhD in cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, or related fields of study are encouraged to apply for this position. Qualifications include a 1) doctoral degree, 2) demonstrated expertise with EEG/ERP and/or eye tracking methods, and 3) an interest in clinical populations. Experience with Matlab (i.e., EEGLab, Psychtoolbox) and statistical analysis programs (R, Stata) is also required. Excellent scientific writing skills and strong publication records are highly desired. Applicants should be able to work independently but should also demonstrate good interpersonal skills and a desire to work in a highly collaborative environment.

PhD Scholarship in error correction coding, University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia

The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the
University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, is offering a
full PhD scholarship to both domestic and international applicants.


The PhD candidate is to conduct research in the area of error
correction coding, with a focus on quantum key distribution systems.
The candidate will by supervised by Associate Professor Sarah Johnson

This scholarship is part of a joint project with Australian company
QuintessenceLabs and the Australian National University (ANU) funded
by an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grant on the topic of
error correction coding for quantum key distribution.


Applicants are required to have achieved honours class one in a
relevant discipline (for example Electrical Engineering or Applied
Mathematics) or have other equivalent research based qualifications.
The applicant is also expected to have a strong foundation in
mathematics and be able to satisfy the University’s English
proficiency policy. Past experience in error correction coding
research is not necessary but will be considered favourably.


The scholarship meets the full tuition fees (and overseas student
health cover costs if required) for a period of three years. It also
provides a tax-free living allowance of AUD 25,406 per annum (2014
rate, indexed annually) with a further top-up available to exceptional
candidates. All University of Newcastle students also have access to a
minimum of AUD 1,500 per annum for research-related expenses and are
issued a new laptop on their commencement.

The University of Amsterdam invites applications for two fully funded positions for a PhD student and a postdoctoral researcher. Both positions are in the area of causal modeling, reasoning and discovery, with a strong focus on applications in molecular biology.

About the project

Many questions in science concern causal relationships. Causal inference, a branch of statistics and machine learning, studies how cause-effect relationships can be discovered from data and how these can be used to make predictions in situations where a system has been perturbed by an external intervention. The ability to reliably make such predictions is of great value for practical applications in a variety of disciplines. The research will focus on the development of new theory and efficient algorithms for robust discovery of causal relationships and estimation of causal effects from a combination of observational data, interventional data, and background knowledge. This work will be done with a strong focus on applications in molecular biology, one of the most promising areas for automated causal discovery from data, enabling a thorough validation of causal prediction methods in practice.

The successful candidates will be based in the Intelligent Autonomous Systems (IAS) Group led by prof. dr. Max Welling, which is part of the Intelligent Systems Lab Amsterdam (ISLA) within the Informatics Institute (IvI) at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. ISLA consists of 20 members of faculty, 20 post-doctoral researchers, and more than 50 PhD students.     PhD program on Brain, Mind, and Computer Science Announcement

    The University of Padova has 6 PhD positions for the new interdisciplinary PhD program on "Brain, Mind, and Computer Science". The aim of this PhD program is to prepare young researchers at the intersection of cognitive and computer sciences, in a way that they will be able to successfully  face the challenges of the society of the future, where people, software agents, and things will all be interconnected.     Description: 
    Collective systems comprise a large number of social and technical entities which are autonomous in terms of their goals and actions, but whose individual behaviors influence each other and define the overall performance of the system. An example is integrated urban mobility, where urban policies, available services and infrastructures, and individual citizens' behaviors all impact the overall performance. Decision making in collective systems is highly distributed and multi-level, and requires the capability to model and aggregate the preferences of all the encompassed entities. This topic investigates methods and tools for modeling and processing individual and aggregated preferences in the scope of collective systems. 


    2. Theme: Cloud computing

    Main topic: Service design in the Cloud 

    Description: 
    The research challenge addressed by this grant is the exploration of the design principles and implementation solutions capable of delivering low-latency low-footprint elastic capacity to application services deployed on the Cloud. The work work will be carried out from the angle of the logical (PaaS) and physical (IaaS) infrastructure underneath the application delivery service, with the intent of allowing flexible and opportunistic federation of selected elements of heterogeneous vertical solutions. 


    3. Theme: Bioinformatics for Personal Genomics

    Main topic: Development and application of machine learning procedures for analysis of genomic data from patients with monogenic and oligogenic diseases. 

    Description: 
    The general aim is to develop suitable and flexible machine learning based methods and software tools for the characterization and classification of genetic data of individuals affected by a particular disease. The PhD student will work in a highly interdisciplinary research environment at the intersection among Computer, Biology, Medical and Cognitive Sciences. High performance computing facilities, as well as state-of-the-art genetic and medical data, will be available to the PhD candidate for the development of the targeted research activity.

    PhD Studentship in Surrey (UK) in collaboration with the European Space Agency

    One PhD position is available in Surrey at the Surrey Space Centre of the University of Surrey (UK),

    Context
    This project builds upon an already established collaboration between the University of Surrey, Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) and the European Space Agency (ESA) where a ground-based automated planning & scheduling system for the imaging campaign of an Earth Observation constellation has been built. Multi agent systems represented a fruitful approach to model this dynamic context. The novelty of this project was to apply Ant Colony Optimisation techniques to achieve optimisation and coordination in the constellation planning. This mechanism offers high-level of adaptability and scalability. The project used mathematical models of non-linear dynamical systems to model the self-organising long-term system’s behaviours. Finally, the system developed has been applied to the ESA GENSO (Global Educational Network for Satellite Operations) network and to the SSTL Disaster Monitoring Constellation.

    Project Title
    Application of Dynamical Systems Theory to Multi Objective Automated Space Mission Planning based on Ant Colony approach

    Project Description
    The work proposed here represents the natural step forward. The innovation of this project regards three main research directions:

    Multi-Objective Optimisation. The P&S problem can be treated as pareto problem, ie. separate optimisation of objectives to find a set of pareto-optimal solutions (which might have conflicting objective goals). This is becoming a key requirement for goal-oriented planning because extends the way how the objectives can be defined and it could greatly improve the operators’ evaluation of the solutions generated.
    Dynamical System Theory. The model previously developed can be extended in a number of directions: the problem representation affects the range of applications of the planning system; the ACO techniques implemented affects its performance.
    Hybrid architecture. This research should explore the benefits of hybrid architecture where deliberative agents are set to regulate the collective behaviours expressed by the self-organising multi agent system. This could extend the capabilities and the reliability of the overall system. 

    Requirements

    The PhD last 3 years. 
    The applicant will be based in Surrey at the university. He can spend periods abroad up to 1 year, in general he should spend 6 months in ESOC but it's not mandatory.
    The supervisor will be Prof Phil Palmer, head of the group of Astrodynamics at the Surrey Space Centre. Alessandro Donati and Nicola Policella will be his tutor at the European Space Operation Centre (ESOC) of Darmstadt (Germany) and Claudio Iacopino will be his tutor at the Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL)
    Applicants should hold a good honours undergraduate or Masters degree in computer science or a closely related discipline such as mathematics.
    Applicants should have a background in artificial intelligence or advanced computer technologies, ideally automated planning and scheduling and an understanding/experience of the Space Operations/ Earth Observation field.
    Applicants' nationality has to be ones of the member states of the European Space Agency

    Ph.D. position at the Department of Computer Science of the Missouri University of Science and Technology

    Communication networks are an inherent part of our life for a wide range of activities. These networks have increased in size, complexity, heterogeneity, energy demand and interdependence with other networks. These aspects open new research problems, which need to be tackled in order to improve the security and efficiency of these networks. 

    The general goal of the Ph.D. work  is the development of efficient solutions for the improvement of security, performance, reliability and energy efficiency of heterogeneous, complex and large scale communication networks, such as geographically distributed web systems, static and mobile wireless sensor networks, small cell networks and wide-area networks. 

    The research will be characterized by a theoretical analysis of the problems and proposed solutions, using a wide range of tools from different fields including computational geometry, statistics, algorithm design, optimization and probability theory, as well as by an experimental and simulation study, to investigate and compare the performance of the proposed solutions against the best performing existing approaches.

    Multiview Learning for Sequence Extraction Tasks

    With the increase of electronically available textual information in different views, new needs for Information Access systems are arising. Many new tasks lie between the classic frameworks of Information Retrieval (IR) and Information Extraction (IE). Machine Learning (ML) is playing a central role in the development of these fields but has been used for the most part for the improvement of existing models. 

    The thesis aims at extending the capabilities of statistical IR models to handle more complex information retrieval and extraction tasks. For this, we are interested in the use of probabilistic sequence models for sequence analysis. In particular, we will consider a text generated by two different sources where each of the texts is a sequence of symbols and not as an unordered set. From this perspective, we seek a sequence model that allows to work at a finer level than what is usually done in IR. Each model associated to a source is learned in the way to minimize the disagreement of the sequence to be extracted with the similar extracted sequence by the other model. Under this framework, we aim to deal with several text analysis tasks within a unifying formalism.

    Profile:
    For this position, we are looking for highly motivated people, with a passion to work in machine learning, information retrieval and the skills to develop algorithms for prediction in real-life applications. We are looking for an inquisitive mind with the curiosity to use a new and challenging technology that requires a rethinking visual processing to achieve a high payoff in terms of speed and efficiency.
    We further seek a candidate with the following additional skills:
    - Probability and statistics ;
    - The ability to analyze, improve and propose new algorithms ;
    - Good knowledge of programming languages with a proved experience is a plus.

    The PhD candidate will work at AMA team (http://ama.liglab.fr/) of the Laboratoire d'Informatique de Grenoble (LIG) lab, a leading Computer Science in France and COFFREO (https://www.coffreo.com/) a French leading Firm in electronic safe. Grenoble is the capital of the Alps in France, with excellent train connection to Geneva (2h), Paris (3h) and Turin (4h). AMA team is a dynamic group working in Machine Learning and connected scientific domains over 20 researchers (including PhD students) and that covers several aspects of machine learning from theory to applications, including statistical learning, data-mining, and cognitive science.
