HBRS is an interdisciplinary graduate school for physicians (MD/PhD, MBBS, Dr.med.) and life scientists (Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Engineering, Veterinary Scienes etc).
Currently, HBRS students come from more than 40 different countries.

In October 2006, HBRS was awarded the title "excellent graduate school". HBRS receives support  for more than 6 years from the German government (DFG) in course of the German "Excellence Initiative". Additional funding is available through - among others - participating in the DFG Excellence Clusters "REBIRTH" (MHH) as well as "Hearing4all" (Oldenburg/ MHH), the Georg Christoph Lichtenberg program of Lower Saxony (DEWIN) as well as the "Niedersachsen Vorab" program by the Ministry of Science and Culture/ Volkswagenstiftung.

HBRS was founded in October 2003. All graduate programs (see left) of Hannover Medical School and partner institutes are coordinated here.

PhD program in Systems Neuroscience

The PhD program in Systems Neuroscience:
  • Is conducted by the virtual cooperative Center for Systems Neuroscience (Zentrum für Systemische Neurowissenschaften Hannover, ZSN) with four participating universities in Hannover
  • Offers project-oriented postgraduate training in neuroscientific research
  • Will train students for specialized, independent scientific studies and provides advanced qualifications for research and related fields
  • Is designed to contribute substantially to the training of young scientists in the fields of systems neuroscience and to provide skills students will need for successful research career
  • Is a cooperative program with international research groups in order to enhance the opportunities for mobility of doctoral candidates and to complete part of the doctoral work at a foreign university.

OPEN CALL FOR DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITIONS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OULU,Doctoral training environment


The University of Oulu, located at the heart of the globally recognized Oulu region R&D hub in Northern Finland, promotes advanced research especially in the focus areas of Biosciences and Health, Environment, Natural Resources and Materials, Information Technology, and Cultural Identity and Interaction. The University, with its 10 faculties and more than 70 specialist disciplines, cooperates closely with industry and commerce, and has broad connections with many international research and education institutions.
The University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS) provides the framework and conditions for high-quality, research-driven doctoral education at the University of Oulu. UniOGS promotes the development of structured Doctoral Programmes covering the areas of Technology, Natural Sciences, Biosciences, Health Sciences, and Human Sciences, and nurtures effective student-supervisor relationships founded on both motivation and commitment. UniOGS thus aims to create a favourable environment for the planning, execution and timely completion of doctoral education tailored to each student.
The Doctoral Programmes of UniOGS provide systematic and comprehensive doctoral training allowing the completion of the doctoral degree within a period equivalent to four years of full-time study. The doctoral training offered within the doctoral programmes promotes and strengthens high-quality research in the University of Oulu strategic focus and development areas, and assures that students acquire good working-life skills that address the needs of both the work-place and society.

General description of the positions and the minimum requirements for selection

The University of Oulu Graduate School invites applications for:
  1. Fifty-eight (58) four-year doctoral student positions for 2016 – 2019, funded by the University of Oulu and distributed between eight of the UniOGS Doctoral Programmes. In addition, two (2) four-year “open research project” (Open-Res) positions will be allocated to applicants whose research relates to any research area of the University of Oulu not covered by the doctoral programmes participating in this call. Applicants for four-year positions will be either starting their doctoral training, or will have completed no more than two full years of training (adjusted for possible previous part-time status) at the time the position is filled.
Funding is also available for:
  1. Seven (7) two-year positions (2016 – 2017) in: the Advanced Materials Doctoral Programme (one position); the Oulu Business School Doctoral Programme (three positions); the Infotech Oulu Doctoral Programme (three positions).
  2. Multiple short-term vacancies (during 2016 – 2017), for doctoral students enrolled in the Infotech Oulu Doctoral Programme (one six-month position), or who are enrolled in the Medical Research Centre Oulu Doctoral Programme and hold a licentiate degree in Medicine or a licentiate degree in Dentistry (up to a cumulative total of 36 years).
The salary of the selected doctoral students will be set on levels 2 – 4 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a supplementary remuneration will be given for personal achievement and performance (max. 46.3%). The total salary for these levels (before tax) currently ranges from about 1972 to 3601 Euros/month for full-time employment.
These full-time positions are available from the 1st of January, 2016, for highly motivated and talented students wishing to undertake and complete training for a research-focused doctoral degree. The work contract may last until the student has completed a total of no more than four years of doctoral training (adjusted for possible part-time status prior to the start of the contract) from the date on which study rights are granted, and may include a trial period of four months. Applicants may apply for multiple positions in different Doctoral Programmes, but successful candidates may occupy only one position.

All applicants must hold a Master’s degree, or an equivalent degree (e.g. licentiate), in a relevant field by the end of 2015, and be able to demonstrate sufficient language skills in English or Finnish (see “Further information” below). The degree will have been accredited with good grades (i.e. at least 60% of the maximum grade in both taught studies and the Master’s thesis). Doctoral Programmes may impose additional or more stringent requirements.

Language proficiency
The teaching languages at the University of Oulu are Finnish and English. All applicants who have not completed a secondary or higher education degree in the Finnish language must demonstrate that they possess English and/or Finnish language skills that are sufficient to follow doctoral studies. For this, the applicant must provide official documents demonstrating one of the following (no other options are considered):
  • The applicant has completed a Bachelor or Master degree taught in English;
  • The applicant has successfully completed at least 20 ECTS credits of studies conducted in English in a higher education institution in Finland;

The topic is non-parametric sequential prediction.
The topic belongs to the areas of machine learning and (extremely) nonparametric statistics. The central theme of this topic is to explore which regularities are "learnable" from sequential data.
Specifically, this general question is considered for the problem of probability forecasting, that is, predicting the probabilities of future outcomes of a series of events given the past. The question to be addressed is: under which assumptions on the stochastic mechanism generating the data is it possible to give forecasts whose error becomes negligible as more data becomes available? Here we specifically allow for the possibility that the predictions are based on a model that is `wrong yet useful', i.e. it does not contain the data generating mechanism. In this 'nonrealizable' or 'misspecified' case, the question becomes: under what conditions it is possible to give forecasts that converge to the best available ones as more data becomes available?

Questions of this kind find applications in a variety of fields, such as finance, data compression, bioinformatics, environmental sciences,  and many others. However, the research topic is mainly about theoretical foundations rather than applications.

As a data innovation lab, the Research team at Pulse Lab Jakarta, together
with our colleagues in Pulse Lab New York and Pulse Lab Kampala, are

PhD Position in machine learning under severe uncertainty

The DI (Decision and Image) team of the Heudiasyc (Heuristic and
Diagnostic Methods for Complex Systems) laboratory recruits one PhD
student funded by the French ministry of education.


The thesis topic concern the problem of learning what are the optimal
pieces of information one should query to reduce uncertainty and reach
a unique optimal decision. Depending on its preferences and skills,
the candidate will either focus on active learning or expert
elicitation problems. The student work will be performed in close
collaboration with experts in the fields of learning and reasoning
under
uncertainty.

Communication networks are an inherent part of our life for a wide range of activities. These networks have increased in size, complexity, heterogeneity, energy demand and interdependence with other networks. These aspects open new research problems, which need to be tackled in order to improve the security and efficiency of these networks.

The general goal of the Ph.D. work  is the development of efficient solutions for the improvement of security, performance, reliability and energy efficiency of heterogeneous, complex and large scale communication networks, such as wide-area networks, geographically distributed web systems, static and mobile wireless sensor networks and small cell networks.

The research will be characterized by a theoretical analysis of the problems and proposed solutions, using a wide range of tools from different fields including computational geometry, statistics, algorithm design, optimization and probability theory, as well as by an experimental and simulation study, to investigate and compare the performance of the proposed solutions against the best performing existing approaches.

We encourage all highly motivated and excellent candidates to apply for this position. Successfull applicants will receive a salary of about 2000$/month.

Applicants must have a bachelor or master degree in Computer Science/Computer Engineering or closely related field, with an emphasis on computer networks.

Requirements:
The candidate should have a first class or upper second class honours
degree, or a master’s degree (or equivalent qualification), in Computer
Science or Electrical Engineering (preferably with focus on Security,
Embedded System, or Networks).  Evidence of good spoken and written English
is essential. The candidate should have an IELTS score of 6.5 or above, or
an equivalent qualification, if the first language is not English. This
position is open to all qualified candidates irrespective of nationality.


Degree:
The student will be awarded a PhD degree from the University of Liverpool
(UK) upon successful completion of the program.


Funding:
The PhD studentship is available for three years subject to satisfactory
progress by the student. The award covers tuition fees for three years
(currently equivalent to RMB 80,000 per annum) and provides a monthly
stipend of 3500 RMB as a contribution to living expenses. It also provides
up to RMB 16,500 to allow participation at international conferences during
the period of the award.  It is a condition of the award that holders of
XJTLU PhD scholarships carry out 300-500 hours of teaching assistance work
per year. The scholarship holder is expected to carry out the major part of
his or her research at XJTLU in Suzhou, China. However, he or she is
eligible for a research study visit to the University of Liverpool of up to
three months, if this is required by the project.

PhD Thesis in Multi-Agent Systems and Optimisation

We offer a fully-funded 3 year PhD position entitled "Multi-agent

The information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure is
evolving and becoming increasingly dynamic and distributed.
Considering the context of sensor networks, the internet of things or
smart power grids, the expected impact on our society is huge. The
general problem of dynamic resource allocation (data, energy, etc.)
between producers and consumers (or prosumers for those that do both)
becomes critical for these infrastructures.


Multi-agent optimization techniques are a natural fit for such
systems:


1) the optimization problem is distributed by nature,
2) the system is highly dynamic with many events emanating from both
   the infrastructure and agent/human activities (and they may switch

   frequently from producer to consumer, and vice versa),
3) the scale of the system calls for strong privacy, which cannot be
   provided by a centralized system.


In the past years, multi-agent systems have been developed by using
message passing algorithms inspired by statistical machine learning
methods. Belief propagation is for instance designed for MAP (maximum
a posteriori) inference in probabilistic graphical models. Its
efficiency (in time and number of iterations) made it possible to
solve, in real time, problems like optimal energy allocation and
automatic service composition in sensor networks. Other message
passing algorithms using dual decomposition of the problem have
similar characteristics.


However, these approaches have some limitations â?"e.g. optimality and
convergence on cyclic networks. Despite recent advances, message
passing is still challenging and remains an open problem. Moreover,
since we consider problems with high dynamics and time-dependencies
(e.g. due to the flexible structure of the network, due to real-time
updates coming from sensors), extending such techniques seems
promising thanks to their runtime efficiency which can be exploited to
handle dynamics (though repeated solving processus) and
time-dependencies (by adding new time-related dimensions and
constraints).


This thesis subject aims at producing new methods and algorithms for
distributed optimization in dynamic networks with cycles.  It will
involve the following steps, non-exhaustively:


1. formalizing the problem of dynamic resource allocation and doing a
   theoretical analysis of the existing algorithms,
2. proposing new algorithms to handle the cyclic and dynamic nature of
   the networks,
3. implementing these algorithms in the form of generalization and
   extensions of existing algorithms,
4. evaluating empirically the algorithms by applying them to real data
   coming from the SEAS project, and deploying it into a smart-objects
   platform at EMSE.
