DLR-DAAD Research Fellowships in the fields of Space, Aeronautics, Energy and Transportation Research

‘DLR – DAAD Research Fellowships’ is a new programme implemented by the ‘Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt’ (DLR) and the ‘German Academic Exchange Service’ (DAAD).
DLR is Germany´s national research center for aeronautics and space. Its extensive research and development work in Aeronautics, Space, Transportation and Energy is integrated into national and international cooperative ventures. As Germany´s space agency, DLR has been given responsibility for the forward planning and the implementation of the German space programme by the German federal government as well as for the international representation of German interests. Approximately 7,400 people are employed in DLR´s 33 institutes and facilities at 16 locations in Germany.
This special programme is intended for highly-qualified foreign doctoral and postdoctoral students as well as senior scientists from the fields of Aeronautics, Space, Transportation, and Energy. Beasiswa NFP Short Course 2016: Food Security and Gender di VHL University

FOOD SECURITY AND GENDER Duration: 3 weeks Location: Velp Start: 28 November 2016 End: 16 December 2016 Tuition Fee: € 3,000 Language: English Application Deadline: October 2016 Fellowship Application Deadline: July 2016 Rural residents of developing countries gain their livelihoods through a wide array of activities such as farming. The livelihood generated from these activities does not only depend on these people's capabilities but also on the availability and access to resources they need. For people with low incomes who live in rural areas, daily food security is an important objective to secure better living circumstances. Rural livelihoods are dynamic. Men and women adapt their livelihood strategies according to fluctuations in social, political, economic and environmental situations. Adaptations are also made with regard to the availability of resources such as land and income. For rural development professionals and organisations, it is of the utmost importance to understand the livelihoods, capabilities and coping strategies of populations in need of assistance. As men and women have specific roles and responsibilities with regards to strengthening their livelihoods and food security, it is necessary to identify gender-specific needs, constraints and opportunities. In this training, participants will learn to analyse livelihood strategies and the factors that influence them. They will be provided with tools to get a better understanding of male and female farmers' decision-making processes. These processes concern crop production, livestock and income-generating activities but also the handling of vulnerabilities and migration, among other issues. In a community, rural livelihoods vary due to factors such as social class, caste and ethnicity but also gender roles, which influence the opportunities for strengthening a rural livelihood. Topics such as labour division and decision-making with regard to resources and other household dynamics are covered in this training. Visits to rural enterprises throughout the Netherlands are organised in order to gain practical knowledge in this domain. For more information, please contact: info@VHLuniversity.com

When should I apply?

IST Austria processes applications to its PhD program once a year, in January.
All admitted students start the program the following September.

The online application form for 2016 admissions can be found here: https://students.app.ist.ac.at/.
The application deadline is January 8, 2016 11:59PM CET, for a PhD start date in September 2016. All application files must be received by the application deadline. Reference letters must be received by January 15, 2016 11:59PM CET.

Who is eligible?

Highly qualified students from all disciplines of the natural sciences, mathematics, computer sciences, and any related interdisciplinary areas, who are committed to pursuing their scientific career in an international research environment, are invited to apply.
All applicants must hold a master’s or bachelor’s degree (or equivalent), or anticipate the completion of the degree before September 2016. Participating students are expected to be proficient in written and oral English.
IST Austria is committed to equality and diversity. In particular, female applicants are encouraged to apply.

What are the selection criteria?

The main criterion for the selection of students is scientific excellence and promise.
Scientific excellence and promise is judged on the basis of undergraduate performance, reference letters, and statement of purpose:
Undergraduate performance is evaluated based on the quality of the undergraduate program, overall grades, grades in specific fields/courses, and other scientific distinctions (e.g. publications, seminar talks or presentations at conferences).
Reference letters are evaluated in terms of how strongly professors or senior scientists who know the candidate well support the candidate’s application for the PhD program.
The statement of purpose should reveal the candidate’s knowledge of the big questions in the field and will be evaluated regarding the preparedness, motivation, and potential of the candidate.
The selection committee will also consider the candidate’s background and diversity. This criterion is broad in scope and considers the degree to which the candidate’s background will enrich the scientific culture of the Institute. Factors include international mobility, interdisciplinarity, collaborations and completed internships, transferable skills such as experience in managing projects and working in teams, teaching, and English language and communication skills.
All applications will be considered holistically with regard to these selection criteria.
Candidates for fields outside of IST Austria’s research portfolio will not be considered.
