International prize studentships for PhD research 2010

Informatics and Computer Science

Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance

The Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance (link: http://www.sicsa.ac.uk) is a collaboration of leading Scottish Universities whose aim is to work together to consolidate and extend Scotland's position as an international research leader in computer science and informatics. As part of this, the Scottish Graduate Academy in Informatics and Computer Science offers up to 20 international prize studentships per year to outstanding candidates who wish to study for a PhD in Scotland.

These studentships are open to excellent students from any country. There are no residency or citizenship requirements. We will consider applicants in any area of computer science and informatics but may give preference to students who are working in SICSA theme areas (link: http://www.sicsa.ac.uk/themes)

Next-generation Internet

Multi-modal interaction

Modelling and abstraction

Complex systems engineering

SICSA prize studentships are worth around £18, 000 per year for 3 years.

They include support for living expenses of at least £12, 940, research expenses and a contribution towards postgraduate fees at the UK standard Home/EU rate (currently £3400). Students who are not UK/EU residents must pay the higher overseas student fee of around £11,500 per year. However, if you are awarded a SICSA studentship, you may apply to the admitting university for additional support to cover the difference in fees. The award of a SICSA studentship does not guarantee such support.

Students must have or must expect to be awarded a 1st class honours degree, an MSc with Distinction or equivalent GPA scores. Your degree must be in a discipline that is relevant to your proposed field of research.

For more details of how to apply for a SICSA prize studentship, see the SICSA web pages (http://www.sicsa.ac.uk/graduate-academy/prizestudentships/applying-for-a-sicsa-prize-studentship).

Applicants for international prize studentships MUST complete an application for postgraduate admission to their preferred university as well as a SICSA studentship application. If you donʼt complete both a university application and an online SICSA application then your studentship application will not be considered.

Applications must be received by 28th February 2010. We will tell you as soon as possible after this date if you have been awarded a studentship. Our aim is to make all offers by early April 2010.

PhD Studentships: Behaviour, Choices and Markets

University of Aberdeen

The principle aim of Behaviour, Choices and Markets is to create a platform for a comprehensive investigation of behaviour and choice within markets and society. This is set within an all-embracing framework interpreted through the perspectives of economic and social science principles. Incentives and choice lie at the heart of human behaviour and through societal interactions can result in multitudinous market outcomes (national and international) often with far reaching consequences. Inherent within the project is an inter-disciplinary approach drawing upon fundamental social science methodologies. The outcomes of the project will generate knowledge and intellectual curiosity about the impact of behavioural interactions on the welfare of society.

The available studentships at PhD level are:

  • Two PhD studentships exploring Energy Markets (one starting 2010, one starting 2011);
  • Two PHD studentships in Experimental Economics utilising the Scottish Experimental Economics Laboratory (one starting 2010, one starting 2011);
  • Two PhD awards within Labour Market Economics (one starting 2010, one starting 2011);
  • A one year Masters in Research (starting 2010) with a view to a PhD (starting 2011) investigating International Property Investment.

These studentships may cover Home/EU or Overseas tuition fees. In addition, the committee awarding studentships for the project will be able to allocate some funds towards maintenance.

Closing date: Friday 21 May (for applications to start in 2010)

For more information, including contact details for the project team and a list of suggested research topics, please visit www.abdn.ac.uk/cass/graduate/funding/research/behaviour.

PhD Scholarships in Offshore Wind Energy Wake Effects in Wind Farms Technical University of Denmark - DTU Mechanical Engineering

Two PhD scholarships are available at DTU Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark in the field of offshore wind energy. The department has a well-proven research tradition in wind energy. The department is strongly involved in ocean energy research through the Statkraft Ocean Energy Research Program, a collaboration between Statkraft AS, DTU, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and University of Uppsala. The two scholarships are supported by Statkaft AS through this programme.

Starting date is 1 April 2010.

Project 1: Wake Effects in Wind FarmsAn existing CFD model for studying three-dimensional flow fields and wake effects in wind farms will be further developed. Computations will be carried out for flows about blades of modern wind turbines clustered in farms. The computing code will be validated against existing measurements from both laboratory and field measurements. The computations are expected to give detailed information about basic features of wind turbine wakes, including turbulence properties and vortex structures, and used to clarify the influence of wake effects when air flow is passing by a row of wind turbines. The model serves in particular to analyze and verify the validity of the basic assumptions employed in the simple engineering models. Furthermore, the results may aid in achieving optimal designs of rotors as well as in the establishment and planning of wind parks.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Strong skills in scientific computing, fluid mechanics, applied mathematics and C/Fortran/Matlab programming are required as well as a keen interest in offshore wind energy. Documented knowledge or experience within wind energy and/or offshore engineering will be considered as an advantage.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
