PhD in a project called Advanced Laser Induced Subsurface Separation ALISS

The University of Twente is an entrepreneurial research university. It was founded in 1961 and offers education and research in areas ranging from public policy studies and applied physics to biomedical technology. The UT is the Netherlands’ only campus university.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering within the faculty of Engineering Technology is one of the largest departments of the university, with an enrolment of more than 300 students per year. The main ambition of the research of the department is the generation and advancement of scientific knowledge, applicable in Mechanical Engineering and other fields of engineering. This orientation on applicability naturally leads to collaborations with other departments and industry.

The Chair of Applied Laser Technology is part of the Mechanical Automation group and is dedicated to research in, as well as application of technology for high power Laser materials processing. The Laser material interaction is studied and process results are improved by sensoring and automation. New processes are developed for micromachining using ablation by femto- and pico second Laser pulses. Improvement of processes and process control are the objectives for laser processes such as cladding, welding and other processes.

Chair

The chair of Applied Laser Technology at Twente University is focusing on machines for the lasering of Materials. The physical aspects of laser material interaction with ultra short pulses are studied and processes are improved by sensoring and automation. The production of micro- and nano-structured surfaces with femto- and pico-second pulsed laser ablation is an emerging and promising technique for which continuously new applications are encountered that may result in completely new devices. It is e.g. applied to metal master surfaces that are subsequently reproduced by injection moulding, rolling or imprint methods. In general the results will contribute to bridging the micro-nano manufacturing gap. In addition to processes for material removal, mainly by ablation, attention is given to laser assisted material deposition of layers on a micro-scale.

Within this group there is a position for a

PhD in a project called Advanced Laser Induced Subsurface Separation ALISS

Background

As electronic packages shrink in size, integrated circuit packaged devices must be reduced both in footprint and thickness. The main motivation for the development of smaller packages is the demand for portable communication devices, such as memory cards, smart cards, cellular telephones and portable computing. One of the aspects of this tendency is that semiconductor dies and consequently wafers will be thinner, down to 20 µm. Below 200 µm separation introduces so much mechanical and thermal stress that the yield reduces to below economical acceptable levels. For efficiency of the use of silicium the sawing kerf-width should be reduced to 10-20 µm, a requirement that cannot be met by mechanical separation technologies. A possible direction for solving these problems is the use of laser modification of the semiconductor material in such a way that internal material modifications will act as breaking lines for the actual separation of the dies in the wafer. The first experiments in this direction have been done by industry and have shown that active laser control and focus control is essential to achieve precisely located material modifications. To further diminish the thermal and mechanical stress the use of ultra short laser pulses must be developed and the separation of the single dies must be developed to obtain good die strength and kerf edge quality

Project

The project focuses on research of a new cutting machine for cutting silicium with laser beams. The project is a cooperation between the University of Twente, Philips, TNO, CCM, Sioux, ALSI and VDL. The research of the group is mainly aimed at the possibilities of ultra short laser pulses. The ALISS project will develop the necessary technologies to make internal modification by multiple laser beams an enabling technology for the use of very thin and low–k wafers. As such the project will deliver a breadboard environment that will show that laser dicing is possible and that the technology can be transferred to an industrial production environment. The required laser and breaking processes will be developed as well as pre-prototypes for the execution of the processes

The ALISS project will show that material modification in semiconductor material can be effectively done with a multi-beam approach. This is essential as this unique feature will have a one on one relation with the productivity of the final system. Current approaches only use single beams and need to process dicing streets several times. The possibility to align dicing streets on the dice in stead of on the global wafer markers will make the ALISS concept robust to cope with the developments in assembly.

Profile

You have completed a master study in mechanical engineering, materials science, physics or equivalent You are proficient in spoken and written English. Background in laser technology is a plus. You have well developed social skills to co-operatively work in our research group as well as with the other partners in the project

Appointment and salary

We offer a challenging position at the interface between Applied Laser Technology and Mechanical Automation. You are offered a position for a period of 4 years. Your salary will be €2042.- gross per month for the first year, leading up to €2612,-gross per month in the 4th year, according to the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. In addition, we offer our employees a broad package of secondary benefits.

Information and application

Following the closure of the online application form, a special commission will meet to assess the applications.

At the end of the selection process, a provisional list of standings will be composed with the names of the students who have been awarded a scholarship and the names of the eligible applicants that may be awarded a scholarship in the event of one or more renunciations.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE AFFIXING OF THE LIST OF STANDINGS TO THE OFFICIAL REGISTER OF THE POLITECNICO DI TORINO WILL BE, FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, THE ONLY OFFICIAL NOTIFICATION OF INCLUSION IN THE LIST OF SELECTIONS AND, FOR STUDENTS WITH THE APPROPRIATE QUALIFICATIONS, THE ONLY OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION THAT THEY HAVE BEEN AWARDED A SCHOLARSHIP.

An e-mail message will be sent to all scholarship recipients and eligible applicants summarising the terms for the disbursement of the scholarship. This message will be sent to the address(es) specified by the students themselves on the online application form. NEVERTHELESS, THIS MESSAGE DOES NOT CONSTITUTE AN OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION OF THE OUTCOME OF THE SELECTION.

The scholarship awardees and eligible applicants who wish to confirm their position must take the following steps:

  1. download the scholarship acceptance form which will be published together with the list of selection outcomes, fill it in and fax it to the number +39 011 090 6329. Failure to send in the acceptance fax within the given period will constitute a definitive renunciation and the scholarship will be reassigned accordingly.
  2. upon arrival in Italy scholarship recipients must hand in the original documentation, which was previously attached to the online application form, to the Politecnico di Torino. Before handing in the aforementioned documentation, we recommend that you make photocopies for yourself. We ask that you not hand in any other documentation other than that which has been required, and put all the documentation in a single folder bearing your name, surname and "INIA project". We reemphasize that the information given in the documents must correspond to that attached to the online application form. Failure to hand in the original documentation within 10 days from the student’s arrival according to the above conditions will result in the non-allocation of the scholarship.

Publication of the final list of standings is foreseen for May 2010.

We emphasize that the Politecnico di Torino assumes no responsibility for the applicant's failure to view the list of standings and/or the terms for the acceptance of the scholarships as published online and on the Official Register of the Politecnico.

In all the e-mail messages and the correspondence sent to the Politecnico following the awarding of the scholarship, the recipient must clearly specify "Politecnico project".

Facilities

The amount of tuition fees for the 2010/2011 academic year is about 1750 Euro. Students from low-income families can be entitled to a reduction or a waiver of tuition fees. In order to obtain such benefit, students must provide an official declaration about:

  • the composition of their family unit
  • the revenue generated abroad in 2009
  • the property and real estate assets generated abroad at December 31st, 2009

These declarations, issued by the competent authorities of the foreign country where the family's income is generated, must be translated into Italian and certified by the Italian Embassy or Consulate. Please see also: Information for students coming from particularly poor countries.
Scholarship recipients, together with the Master of Sciences courses, will benefit from:

  • an intensive Italian language course, compulsory and free of charge
  • additional services offered to the student community (access to the Politecnico libraries and computer laboratories, WI-FI (Wireless LAN), etc.); scholarship recipients will also be entitled to all the services offered by the regional university student assistance organisation, Ente regionale per il DIritto allo Studio Universitario (EDISU Piemonte) at full fee: student canteen service, cultural and recreational activities, sports activities, libraries with lending service, etc. (for more information visit the Campus Facilities section)

Notes

  • Enrolment at the Politecnico includes insurance coverage for accidents occurring on the university premises.

Medical insurance for emergencies (First Aid), as required by the law for non-EU citizens, is about 100 EURO per year. Upon their arrival in Italy, students must pay this amount to INA Assitalia: this is required for the conversion of the entry visa into a residence permit. For further information on these matters, see the Health insurance section.

  • We advise students to go to the Italian Embassy or Consulate to inform themselves on the necessary requirements to obtain an entry visa in Italy.

2. Phd in symmetry, reduction and stability of mechanical systems
Description of the project:
The role that symmetry properties of a dynamical system play in its reduction to a (possibly) simpler system, and in the stability properties of certain of its solutions, is an important field of research. Whereas this topic has already been extensively dealt with in the case of Hamiltonian systems in a symplectic or, more generally, a Poisson context , the Lagrangian side of the story has always received much less attention in the literature.
The goal of this project therefore is to restore this balance in some sense by analyzing symmetry and reduction aspects in the context of Lagrangian dynamical systems. In particular, attention will be focused on so-called Routh reduction and Routh reduction by stages for invariant and quasi-invariant Lagrangian systems. The techniques will be illustrated on some concrete mechanical systems such as, for instance, a rigid body submerged in a fluid. The stability of relative equilibria will also be investigated in a Lagrangian setting. Finally, the extent to which the symmetry and reduction techniques for Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems can be modified or generalized in order to apply them to systems with non-holonomic constraints and to (non-Lagrangian) systems with dissipation, will also be investigated.

Structure

The selected candidate will begin the internship program with an intensive term of full-time study. This initial 4-month term will provide a solid scientific understanding of supply chain management. During this initial period the student will meet with the GHRG periodically to be kept abreast of current projects but will have limited responsibilities in addition to full time study. Upon successful completion of this first term, the intern will begin work with the GHRG on a part-time basis. In addition to working with the GHRG the intern will begin working on his/her thesis and take a modified course load, satisfying all requirements for the Masters Degree by May of the following year. The timeline below provides an example of how the intern's time will be divided between activities.

Coverage

The internship program covers the full cost of tuition, administration fees, and books for the ZLOG program (approximately €22,000). In addition, the student will receive a monthly stipend of €1,050 upon successful completion of the first term.

Eligibility

This is a highly competitive position. The candidate must, at a minimum, fulfill all of the ZLOG admissions requirements (found at the end of this document) in order to be considered. While a strong background in Global Health and/or International Development is highly desirable, exceptional candidates from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Application Process and Documents

To apply, candidates must complete all of the application requirements from the ZLOG program (found at www.zlc.edu.es ). In addition, please include a brief essay (less than 500 words) describing why you are specifically well-suited to contribute to the GHRG. The deadline for applying to the internship program is April 15, 2009. Short-listed candidates will be notified by April 30, 2009 and interviews will be arranged.
