Dear all,

The Centre for Applied English Studies encourages applications for full-time and
part-time Ph.D or M. Phil from well-qualified candidates whose research interests
match those of the Centre for admission in September 2013. The Centre has
special expertise in a number of areas. It is particularly strong in linguistics as
applied to English language education at university level.

Our supervisors' research interests can broadly be classified into five areas:

Autonomy
 - autonomous learning, self-access

Discourse Studies
 - academic and professional literacies, discourse analysis (including written and
spoken), second language writing, writing across the curriculum

English Language Teaching
 - assessment and evaluation, classroom interaction, curriculum development,
task-based learning

Language Learning
 - computer-assisted language learning, individual differences in language learning,
learner histories, learning styles and strategies, psycholinguistics, second/third
language acquisition

Sociolinguistics
 - code-mixing, conversation analysis, cross-cultural communication, humour,
identity construction, language contact, politeness; workplace communication

Full-time MPhil and PhD students who hold a first degree with second-class
honours first division (or equivalent) or above are normally considered eligible to
receive a Postgraduate Scholarship during the normative study period. (For your
information, the basic level of scholarship is HK$13,600 (US$1,740) per month for
the 2012-2013 academic year). Other scholarships are also available subject to
applicants' academic qualifications and relevant experiences.

Background

Established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong in 2009, the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong's institutions.

Eligibility

Candidates who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students in the following eight institutions, irrespective of their country of origin, prior work experience, and ethnic background, should be eligible to apply.

For awardees who need more than three years to complete their PhD studies, additional support may be provided by the chosen institutions. The Computational Epidemiology Lab at ISI Foundation (Turin, Italy) offers a postdoctoral position in Complex Systems/Epidemic Spreading
A 1+1 years postdoctoral position is available at the Computational Epidemiology Lab at ISI Foundation, Turin, Italy. The candidate is expected to work within the framework of the EC project PREDEMICS (http://predemics.biomedtrain.eu/cms/) with the aim of analyzing and modeling the emergence and spreading of infectious diseases.

We are looking for a strongly motivated person with excellent skills in theoretical modeling, computing, data collection and analysis, and a keen interest in multidisciplinary research. The candidate should have a PhD (or expect to have one for the starting date) in physics, applied mathematics, computer science, epidemiology, quantitative biology or any close related discipline. Proven ability to work independently and to quickly adapt to new scientific environments are essential for this position. Good communicative skills to successfully collaborate with the other members of the group, and a good knowledge of both oral and written English are required.

The selected candidate will join the Institute for Scientific Interchange Foundation (www.isi.it) in Turin, Italy and will work in collaboration with Dr. Vittoria Colizza and the members of the Computational Epidemiology Lab. The topics of the work will be marked by the objectives of the PREDEMICS project, that include the modeling of spatial spread of infection diseases affecting different types of hosts, and the study of virus mutation and evolution (with particular attention on influenza A virus). The work will be conducted in collaboration with the other partners of the project, including the Pasteur Institute (Paris, France), the Fundacio d'Ivestigacio Sanitaria de les illes Balears Ramon Llull (Spain), the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium), the Universiy of Edinburgh (UK). The research work will be both computational (development of data-driven computational models) and theoretical (use of network physics approaches and more in general complex systems approaches for a theoretical characterization of spreading processes). Experience in complex systems and networks, epidemic propagation phenomena and/or evolution is highly desirable.

The Fiscal Year 2012 (FY12) Defense Appropriations Act provides $120 million (M) to the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) to support innovative, high-impact breast cancer research.  The BCRP is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) through the Office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).
 
The BCRP is providing the information in this pre-announcement to allow investigators time to plan and develop applications.  The FY12 BCRP program announcement and general application instructions for the following award mechanism are anticipated to be posted on Grants.gov in October 2012.  This pre-announcement should not be construed as an obligation by the government.

  • Postdoctoral Fellowship Award
 
Eligibility:
 
  • Principal Investigator: Doctoral graduates (Ph.D. or M.D.).  Clinical investigators are eligible to apply.  Must have no more than 2 years experience in the proposed research setting and no more than 4 years of postdoctoral research experience as of the application deadline.
  • Mentor or formal co-mentor must have breast cancer research experience, including current funding and publications.
 
Key Mechanism Elements:
 
  • Supports the training of exceptionally talented recent doctoral or medical graduates who have demonstrated that they are the "best and brightest" of their peers.
  • Individualized training program and mentorship should prepare the PI for an independent career at the forefront of breast cancer research.
  • Proposed research should address a critical problem in breast cancer.

Global Undergraduate Exchange program (Global UGRAD)

Global Undergraduate Exchange program

The Office of Academic Exchange Programs in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U. S. Department of State is pleased to announce an exchange program for undergraduate students - The 2013 Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD). 

The Global UGRAD Program provides scholarships for one semester or one academic year of U.S. Study in a NON-DEGREE Program. The goals of the program are to provide a diverse group of emerging student leaders, from non-elite and underrepresented groups in Indonesia and East Asia.

All global UGRAD Program participants will be enrolled full-time in undergraduate course work chosen from the institution's (US) existing curriculum to allow students ample opportunity for ongoing interaction with U.S. Faculty and student peers, and for exposure to U.S. academic and classroom culture.

To ensure that students succeed in their new academic environments, host institutions will offer tailored instruction on topics including academic research and writing, critical thinking, time management, note taking, and studying for and taking tests. Participants will live on campus with American peers.

Students will also be provided with opportunities to participate in up to ten hours of community service per semester. Additionally, an internship component will be offered to all academic-year participants during the academic component of the program. Internships will be related to each participant's field of study and/or career plans.

Participants may be eligible for up to 4 weeks of intensive English Language instruction in the United States prior to the start of academic portion of their program.

Eligibility:

Scholarships will be granted to students who are currently enrolled in S-1 degree programs only, and have completed their first and up to the fifth semester of undergraduate study at an Indonesian university, by November 1, 2012. Please note that those who are in the sixth semester and above are not eligible to apply.
Applicants should demonstrate leadership potential through academic work, community involvement, and extracurricular activities.
Applicants must have a valid minimum ITP TOEFL score of 500 or IELTS 5.0 or IBT TOEFL score of 60/61. (TOEFL prediction or TOEFL-like score cannot be accepted).
Preference will be given to those who have had little or NO experience in the U.S. or outside of their home countries.
Applications can be for either for one semester or two semester based on nominee's availability. No applications should be submitted for both one semester and two semester programs.
Applicants are required to return to Indonesia after the completion of the program.

Description:

Two PhD positions are available, associated with the Australian Research Council
funded project 'Thinking and talking about atolls: the role of environment in shaping
language and our understanding of physical space.' One position will be based at
University of Newcastle (Newcastle, Australia), the other at Monash University
(Melbourne, Australia).

A good undergraduate degree in linguistics is required, preferably a first-class
Honours degree or Master's degree.

Two positions are available for PhD students to conduct research on the role of the
environment in shaping systems of linguistic spatial reference. The project will use
field-based investigation of languages spoken on atolls to test hypotheses on
correlations between the physical environment in which a language is spoken and
aspects of that language's system of spatial reference, particularly relating to
absolute frame of reference. The subproject associated with one PhD will involve
field research on the Marshallese language, primarily in the Marshall Islands but
also in the United States. The second PhD subproject will involve field research on
the Dhivehi language of the Maldives.

Applicants will require solid undergraduate training in linguistics, ideally with some
training in the application of experimental methodologies. We are especially
interested in applicants with an interest in the relationship between language and
cognition, ideally with some background in spatial language. Some knowledge of
Austronesian or Indo-Aryan languages will be helpful.

The Marshallese subproject will be housed in the Endangered Languages
Documentation, Theory and Application Research Group at the University of
Newcastle, and will be supervised by Dr Bill Palmer. The Maldives subproject will
be housed in the Department of Linguistics at Monash University and will be
supervised by Dr Alice Gaby. Both will form part of a team of researchers including
Palmer and Gaby and one other PhD student.

BEASISWA ISLAMIC DEVELOPMENT BANK (IDB): BEASISWA DENGAN TUNJANGAN HIDUP KELUARGA


Untuk rekan-rekan yang ingin melanjutkan studi ke luar negeri, tetapi sering terkendala dengan masalah tidak bisa mengajak serta keluarga karena dana beasiswa yang terbatas, beasiswa dari Islamic Development Bank ini bisa menjadi alternatif untuk bisa studi lanjut keluar negeri . Islamic Development Bank (IDB) adalah sebuah organisasi ekonomi yang berpusat di Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. IDB memberikan program beasiswa ini kepada negara-negara anggota dan muslim communitydi negara-negara non-anggota IDB sebagai bentuk dukungan terhadap pembangunan sumber daya manusia di negara-negara tersebut.

Ada 3 tipe beasiswa yang ditawarkan oleh IDB, meliputi:

Persyaratan dan Fasilitas dari beasiswa IDB

IDB menetapkan beberapa kriteria bagi seseorang untuk bisa melamar pada program Merit Scholarship Programme for High Technology, yaitu:

    1. Berusia tidak lebih dari 35 tahun (untuk program PhD) dan 40 tahun (untuk program Post Doc)
    2. Merupakan anggota institusi penelitian atau institusi akademik di negara asal. Untuk Indonesia, IDB lebih menyukai dosen atau peneliti di lembaga penelitian.
    3. Memiliki pengalaman kerja dan penelitian di bidang yang relevan yaitu science dan technology minimal 2 tahun. Ini dibuktikan dengan menyertakan copy publikasi ilmiah atau penelitian yang relevan.
    4. Mempunyai proposal riset yang baik dan jelas, terkait dengan pembangunan science dan technology di negara asal.
    5. Mempunyai kemampuan bahasa yang memenuhi kriteria untuk menempuh pendidikan di negara tujuan.

Akan lebih baik juga jika rekan-rekan sudah memilki offer letter (conditional atau unconditional) dari sebuah universitas. Jika belum memiliki offer letter, tidak ada salahnya juga tetap mencoba. IDB menetapkan kriteria penilaian tersendiri untuk menyeleksi calon penerima beasiswa IDB atau yang dikenal dengan IDB Scholars. Jika proposal riset yang kita susun baik dan jelas dan memenuhi kriteria IDB, proses mencari institusi tempat belajar bisa dilanjutkan setelah dinyatakan diterima sebagai IDB Scholars. IDB memberikan waktu selama 12 bulan sejak dinyatakan menerima beasiswa IDB, untuk mencari institusi tempat belajar. Jika tidak bisa memenuhi dalam jangka waktu 12 bulan, dengan berat hati IDB akan mencabut hak beasiswa ini.

Fasilitas yang diberikan oleh IDB untuk IDB scholars juga cukup baik, tidak kalah dengan beasiswa yang lain. Fasilitas ini meliputi:

    1. Pembayaran tuition fee dan/atau research bench fee.
    2. Tunjangan hidup, jumlahnya tergantung negara tujuan. Untuk UK, saat ini tunjangan hidup adalah £975 per bulan. Untuk yang membawa keluarga, ada tunjangan untuk spouse (suami/istri) sebesar £400 per bulan ditambah tunjangan hidup untuk anak sebesar 15% per anak (dicover hingga anak ke empat).
    3. Tunjangan untuk buku dan pakaian, saat ini sebesar USD 100 per bulan.
    4. Tunjangan pembelian computer, saat ini sebesar USD 1200
    5. Tunjangan mengikuti konferensi, saat ini sebesar USD 1500, untuk digunakan selama masa studi.
    6. Tunjangan untuk settlement saat pertama datang, besarnya 1 (satu) kali tunjangan hidup perbulan.
    7. Tunjangan untuk thesis preparation, besarnya USD 250.
    8. Tiket pulang dan pergi dari negara asal ke negara tujuan, digunakan saat berangkat dan pulang setelah selesai studi.
    9. Asuransi kesehatan. Untuk UK, tidak diberikan karena asuransi kesehatan sudah dicover oleh NHS.

Dengan fasilitas ini, bagi rekan-rekan yang ingin studi lanjut ke luar negeri dengan tetap membawa serta keluarga, beasiswa IDB ini kiranya bisa memberikan alternatif untuk tetap melanjutkan pendidikan ke luar negeri.

Langkah-langkah mendaftar beasiswa IDB

Beasiswa IDB ini dibuka mulai bulan September setiap tahunnya. Untuk proses seleksi awal dilakukan di negara asal. Untuk Indonesia, seleksi dilakukan oleh pejabat yang berwenang di Departemen Keuangan.
