Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship Program for International Students

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) was created to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and to establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning. It is worth $50,000 per year for three years and is available to both Canadian and international PhD students studying at Canadian universities.

In an effort to support students in broadening their research horizons and seeking new challenges, the Vanier CGS program strongly encourages candidates to pursue their studies beyond the university that granted their undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Eligibility for Nomination

To be considered for a Vanier CGS, you must:
  • be nominated by only one Canadian university, which must have received a Vanier CGS allocation;
  • be seeking financial support to pursue your first doctoral degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD);
  • intend to pursue, in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of results, full-time doctoral (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD) studies and research at the nominating university;
  • have completed no more than 20 months of doctoral studies as of May 1, 2012;
  • have achieved a first-class average, as determined by your university, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent; and
  • not have already received a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, SSHRC or NSERC to undertake or complete a doctoral degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD).
Nomination process
  1. Students apply, or are invited to apply, for the Vanier CGS funding program through the Canadian institution where they will pursue their studies (they need not have been offered admission at the time of application).
  2. Candidates must complete the Vanier CGS application form, including all official transcripts, and submit it to their department.
  3. Departments review the applications and nominate one student for Vanier awards in NSERC, SSHRC or CIHR, as appropriate.
The university is permitted to send forward a limited number of applications to each agency as follows:

NSERC = 7
SSHRC = 2
CIHR = 1

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) must be held at the nominating university.

Nominees will be evaluated and selected based on the three main criteria: academic excellence, research potential, and leadership. In submitting your nominations, please pay close attention to the requirement for evidence of leadership skills or potential.

Application Procedure

For further details and application procedure please visit the Vanier Canada webpage.

Please note, application deadline to the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship Program for International Students is 09 November, 2011.

Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarships (MIFRS)

The Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarship (MIFRS) is awarded to international students wishing to undertake graduate research degree studies at the University of Melbourne. MIFRSs are funded by the University with each faculty having a limited number to award.

To be considered for an MIFRS, applicants need to have an unconditional offer of a place in a graduate research degree course (eg masters by research, PhD or other research doctorate) at the University of Melbourne.

Academic Requirements

The academic requirements to be considered for the graduate research scholarships are the same as those that apply to entry to the PhD, and these requirements apply even if a scholarship is sought to undertake a masters by research.

The key academic requirements that applicants must meet are:
  • Completion of tertiary studies that are at least equivalent to a four-year honours degree at an Australian university, and
  • Applicants normally need to have completed a research project/component as part of their tertiary studies that accounts for at least 25% of their year's work at 4th year or masters level.
Examples of tertiary studies that normally meet the academic requirements include:
  • 3-year bachelors course followed by a 1-year
  • honours [eg. BA(Hons), BCom(Hons)]
  • postgraduate diploma
  • masters preliminary qualification, or
  • masters course
  • 4-year bachelor with honours course [eg. BE(Hons), LLB(Hons)].
Academic merit is the primary selection criterion for graduate research degree scholarships. Demonstrated research potential is also taken into account.

Application Process

Please refer to the How to Apply section of the Graduate Research Scholarships website.

Note, application deadline to the Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarships (MIFRS) is 31 October, 2011
