Ph. D. Opportunity in Clinical Biostatistics - University of Queensland

The Queensland Clinical Trials & Biostatistics Centre (QCTBC) (http://www.sph.uq.edu.au/qctbc) at the School of Population Health, University of Queensland, Australia, is offering an international collaboration-based Ph. D. Program in Clinical Biostatistics.

Project Title: Investigation of the Dynamic Relationship among Risk Factors in Type 2 Diabetes Patients treated with Insulin and / or Exenatide.

Duration of Study: 3 years

Project Description:

QCTBC is conducting a high profile program of study exploring the inter-relationships among various clinical and biochemical risk factors in type 2 diabetic patients. While a range of treatment regimens is currently available in type 2 diabetes, more research is needed in order to achieve better glycaemic control and improved clinical outcomes. The relationships among disease risk factors, their individual and interactive effects on outcomes, and the extent to which risk factors modify treatment efficacy has not yet been fully elucidated.

The aim of this innovative Ph. D. project is to further develop novel statistical methodologies in order to understand the pathophysiology of risk factors in type 2 diabetes patients. This study is scientifically supported by various academic institutes and pharmaceutical companies, and offers the opportunity of making a major contribution in the field of diabetes and cardiovascular research.

Selection Criteria:

Essential:
• M. Sc. in Mathematical Statistics or Biostatistics with strong methodological background and programming ability, with some research experience;
• Strong motivation to conduct independent research in the field of clinical biostatistics;
• Excellent programming knowledge with software like R & SAS;
• Ability to work independently and take responsibility of a programme of work.

Desirable:
• Interest in clinical research, especially in diabetes and metabolic diseases;
• Excellent written communication skills.

Spatial Change and Spatial Interaction Modelling

This course covers important modelling foundations of urban and regional dynamics and their relation to GIS and remote sensing, in particular for spatial change and spatial interaction analysis.

Changes in locations and patterns of human activity in cities and in their hinterland can be characterised through sets of variables that determine the direction, extent and nature of these changes. Such change processes are highly complex because they are the result of the aggregate outcomes of a large number of individuals and organisations interacting with one another and with their environment. In peri-urban areas, urbanisation results in both direct and indirect changes in the use of land. Understanding such processes is essential to achieving sustainable development.

Spatial growth (or spatial change) models can be used to better analyse, predict and simulate the likely functional patterns of urban and regional development. Spatial interaction models analyse flows of people and goods between locations, based on the size of (potential) economic activity. Such models are of relevance to the study of optimal service locations and people’s accessibility to economic opportunities, as well as the simulation and forecast of network flows, and can also be used to optimise and manage network throughput.

In this course, participants will learn about spatial interaction theory and models, spatial growth/change models, and the use of detection algorithms for multitemporal remote sensing images to model development, change and expansion in rapidly changing peri-urban regions. Network geography and space syntax are also discussed.

Sensitivity Analysis for Deterministic Controller Design - SADCO

Optimisation-based control systems concern the determination of control strategies for complex, dynamic systems, to optimise some measures of best performance. It has the potential for application to a wide range of fields, including aerospace, chemical processing, power systems control, transportation systems and resource economics. It is of special relevance today, because optimization provides a natural framework for determining control strategies, which are energy efficient and respect environmental constraints.

The multi-partner initial training network SADCO aims at: Training young researchers and future scientific leaders in the field of control theory with emphasis on two major themes sensitivity of optimal strategies to changes in the optimal control problem specification, and deterministic controller design; Advancing the theory and developing new numerical methods; Conveying fundamental scientific contributions within European industrial sectors.

In order to reach these objectives, SADCO establishes a collaborative research and training network of 11 full partners from both the academic and industrial sectors, and gathers participants with expertises in complementary disciplines in mathematics and engineering. The network also offers a complete range of theoretical, practical and complementary training as well as scientific workshops. SADCO will work together with the young researchers to develop and implement effective training plans tailored to each individual requirements. Multi-disciplinary training based on the integrated scientific programme, secondments, regular meetings, active networking, will ensure the success of this projects.

The development of new 'clean' technologies in power, transportation and other domains is a major opportunity for EU industries. The research programme will help place EU universities in the forefront of Optimal Control, a field of mathematics that supports these technologies.

The training programme, based on institutions covering the principal areas of the field, will provide a new generation of young mathematicians with broad skills in Optimal Control, which are not readily acquired at one institution alone. They will be equipped to take forward research in Optimal Control at universities, or to work in related, emerging technological areas, of vital importance to society.

This financial aid is made available to international graduate students for the
purpose of globalizing the campus by attracting outstanding graduate students

Scholarship for developing countries in TAIWAN
Eligibility:
1. College graduates or graduate students from abroad applying for admission to
our graduate programs as full-time students may apply for one year’s financial
aid.
2. Near the end of their first academic year, students may apply for the
renewal of the financial aid for their next year of graduate study by submitting
the following materials: the previous year’s transcript, a report on or examples
of their research output, and a letter of recommendation from their faculty
advisor.
3. Students who have already received financial aid from the R.O.C. government
or other academic sources are not eligible to apply to this particular financial
aid program; however, they may still receive an educational subsidy for any work
performed.
4. Duration of Scholarships:
* Master’s program scholarships: maximum two years

Quota Scheme at University of Oslo, Norway

The Quota Scheme

The Norwegian Quota Scheme is a funding scheme offered by the Norwegian Government to students from developing countries, Central and Eastern Europe, and Central Asia for studies at institutions of higher education in Norway.

.Nationality

Applicants from countries in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and developing countries are eligible to apply for Quota funding. Applicants who live in another country than their country of citizenship, either temporarily or permanently, can not apply.

Institutional Cooperation

Applicants from institutions with which the University of Oslo has a formal cooperation agreement are eligible to apply. Preference is given to applicants who are linked to active and ongoing formalized cooperation/projects within the specific subject area.

Study programmes

Quota applicants may apply for selected Master's degree programmes and PhD programmes. Applicants studying Scandinavian studies in their home countries may also apply for a one-year advanced Norwegian language programme.

Quota funding

Quota funding covers student housing and basic living expences for one person during the study period. The funding is given as part loan/part grant by the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund. After completing the programme and returning to the student's home country, the loan part is converted to a scholarship. If residence is taken in Norway within ten years after termination of studies, the scholarship is converted back to a loan and must be repaid.
