Overview

Wider context of the project
This PhD scholarship is funded by the DTU Environment.

The overall aim of the PhD fellowship is to close the current knowledge gap, existing between state-of-the-art process models, predicting the fate of xenobiotic organic micro-pollutants (XOMs) and full-scale XOM removal efficiencies observed in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Major outputs of this project shall be a modeling framework developed for assessing the fate of selected pharmaceuticals in WWTPs.

The list of possible scientific collaborators include leading scientist in the field, working at DTU Environment, the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (Norway) and at the Laboratory of Environmental Biotechnology-INRA-UR50 (France).

Scientific focus of the announced PhD position
Removal of anthropogenic pharmaceutical contaminants derived from point and network sources through conventional biological treatment processes is a significant but insufficient means in reducing the environmental impact. The selection and development of, for instance, antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the environment is one of the greatest concerns with regard to the use of antimicrobials – a potential threat to public health.

Consequently, the robust prediction of xenobiotic organic micro-pollutants (XOM) mass-balance around bioreactors is crucial to (i) improve the assessment of the environmental impact, (ii) assist the regional decision making process to optimize pollution control; (iii) develop robust control strategies, including advanced chemical processes combined with biological systems. Research in the field of water and environmental biotechnology is concerned with describing XOM fate using experimental and mathematical modeling assessments. Simulation results obtained using conventional process models of xenobiotic organic micro-pollutant (XOM) fate in water discharges suggest significant discrepancies between measured (full-scale) data.

As evidenced by our already published results, these model inefficiencies can be avoided using a model identification/calibration method developed in a former project. The high number of pharmaceutical XOMs and the wide variety of biodegradation and speciation processes characteristic to these compounds require the development of a modeling framework, including process kinetics equations and assumptions made based on physico-chemical assessment of contaminants – an aim that this fellowship would advocate. The PhD fellow would carry out mathematical model identification, calibration and evaluation using an experimental database. Additionally, the successful candidate would carry out or coordinate targeted experimental activities, if required. Model-based evaluation of possible engineering solutions to enhance XOM removal will also be undertaken. The simulation software WEST (MostForWater) with open code will be used by the fellow.

Qualifications

At the date of appointment candidates must hold an MSc degree in engineering sciences, natural sciences and/or mathematics, preferably with a specialization in two of the following fields: bio-/chemical/environmental engineering, statistics, process modeling and Bayesian analysis. The successful candidate must be an efficient team worker, have good communication skills, and have a critical approach to formulation and testing of hypotheses. Practical experience (e.g., laboratory, process modelling) is an advantage but not a prerequisite. Any former process modeling experience in using the software WEST will be considered as an advantage.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.

The successful candidate will be employed at and enrolled as a PhD student at DTU Environment (www.env.dtu.dk), within the framework of the Urban Water Technology graduate school (www.urbanwatertech.dk). Annual salary starts at 45,000 EUR before tax, including pension/holiday pay.

PhD Scholarship in Recruitment of Baltic Cod at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua)


Overview
A PhD Scholarship on recruitment of Baltic cod is available at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) with starting date February 2011. The project will be carried out in the Section for Population Ecology and –Genetics in Charlottenlund.

DTU Aqua is an institute at the Technical University of Denmark. The purpose of DTU Aqua is to provide research, advice and education at the highest international level within the sustainable exploitation of living marine and freshwater resources, the biology of aquatic organisms and the development of ecosystems as well as their integration in ecosystem-based management. The institute has an international research staff comprising approx. 90 academic employees.

Project description
The PhD project will address the role of clupeids as predators on early life stages of cod, and involves field sampling, laboratory analyses and modelling studies. It will investigate the impact of predation by sprat and herring on cod eggs and larvae based on diet compositions of clupeids sampled in areas and during years with widely contrasting hydrographic conditions. Specifically, the project will focus on: 1) prey selection of herring and sprat from the available food environment, monitored by plankton surveys conducted concurrently to the stomach sampling, and 2) estimating cod egg predation mortality caused by clupeids based on developed prey selection models, egg abundance and distribution from ichthyoplankton surveys, as well as herring and sprat abundance from hydroacoustic surveys and stock assessment models.

Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate who has:
  • Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree, or equivalent, in Aquatic Sciences
  • Previous experience in fisheries and marine biological research
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Keen interest in research and a wish to work in the field of aquatic science

With Ph.D.Plus Scholarships VLIR-UOS gives the opportunity to PhD degree holders to follow an intensive (refresher) course or conduct intensive scientific activities in a short period of time at a Flemish university and under the supervision of a Flemish promoter with the aim of utilising the acquired knowledge in the local context.

Only nationals from a country on the country list can apply who have not been granted a Ph.D.Plus scholarship from VLIR-UOS yet and who have obtained a Ph.D. degree

  • at (preferably but not necessarily) a Flemish university OR at another university but then this must have been in the framework of a VLIR-UOS programme;
  • at least 1 year before the start of the Ph.D. Plus scholarship.

candidates for 15 month terms starting immediately.

Positions are available for

1) Process simulation: integration of membranes into existing
processes for CO2 capture and enriched oxygen combustion in fossil fueled
power generation.
2) Process simulation: development and cost analysis of new process
designs for CH4 purification from anaerobic digestion of biomass and/or
landfill gas.

In the two positions above, applicants do not need direct experience in gas
membrane separations but experience in process design and simulation is
the primary focus.

3) Polymer chemists for development of membrane materials (PIMs
and interpenetrating networks).
4) Formation and testing of asymmetric flat sheet/hollow fibre
membranes for gas separations.

The post-doctoral positions at NRCC are now called Research Associates with
medical/dental/holiday benefits and a salary of ~60,000 $CDN/year. You are

Overview
The School of Environment and Development invites applications for a fully-funded scholarship for candidates from developing countries for Master`s study by distance learning on the MSc Management and Information Systems. The scholarship will cover all study costs including tuition and examining fees and course material costs.

MSc Management and Information Systems
The MSc in M&IS develops the “hybrid” mix of management and information systems skills that we know from experience is essential to the successful and strategic application of information and communication technologies by today’s organizations.
It is designed to develop two groups of participants in developing and transitional economies: functional managers who wish to take greater control over, and make a more direct contribution to, change in their organizations via the development and implementation of information systems; and information systems professionals who wish to improve the success rate of the information systems they develop or use, and who may also wish to upgrade their management skills and knowledge.
The programme is offered by IDPM`s Development Informatics Group, with staff members contributing to the University`s Centre for Development Informatics.

Who studies on this programme?
The MSc M&IS programme is available through distance learning so that practitioners can study while continuing to work in their ongoing professional roles, in the public, private and civil society sectors, or in roles in international organizations, agencies or NGOs. Students work alongside their MSc study, and complete the programme part-time, typically in about two-and-a-half years.

Who is eligible to apply for a scholarship?
The scholarships are intended to support students from developing countries who would not otherwise be able to study for a UK qualification. Applicants should:
Be a national of and resident in a developing country of Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America or Oceania.
Have at least two years` work experience in a post relevant to their MSc M&IS studies.
Hold a UK second class honours, upper division, or above, or its international equivalent, in their Bachelor`s degree.
Applicants must not have previously studied in a developed country (short/language courses excluded).

European Master Scholarships in Nuclear Fusion Science and Engineering Physics, Erasmus Mundus
The aim of the European Master in Nuclear Fusion Science and Engineering Physics (FUSION-EP) programme is to provide a high-level, multinational, research-oriented education in fusion-related engineering physics, in close relation to the research activities of the partners, together with a well-integrated language and cultural experience. The combined and harmonized teaching & research of the 7 universities offers a broad range of competences in the field of fusion science and engineering physics. The Joint European Masters Programme offers a genuine European opportunity for Master level studies in a field which is of crucial importance to solving the urgent and vital problem of world energy supply.

In view of the expertise of the partners, the programme offers three programme tracks to the student: Plasma physics (fusion-oriented); Computational methods in physics; and Instrumentation and Radiation. The programme structure is combined with a mandatory stay for each student at two universities in two countries: semesters 1&2 at University A; and semesters 3 & 4 in B. Semesters 3 & 4 are in a particular track.
During semester 4 students will also attend a one month long winter school at the ITER site (attendance is compulsory). After semesters 2 & 4 a summer event is organized (attendance is compulsory) in which tracks and Master thesis topics are proposed for Master 1 students Master 2 students defend their thesis at this event. Student mobility is an inherent part of the programme structure and philosophy.

No difference is made between third-country students, EU students, grantees and non-grantees. Applicants (students and scholars) from third countries (whether or not applying for a grant) will be subject to a well-defined selection procedure aimed at achieving high quality.
Erasmus Mundus Scholarship
Per academic year Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available for FUSION-EP students from third countries are available. Nationals coming from all countries other than the 25 EU Member States (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, the UK, Sweden, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia), the EEA-EFTA states (Island, Liechtenstein and Norway) and the candidate countries for accession to the EU (presently Croatia and Turkey), who are not residents of any of the above countries, and who have not carried out their main activities (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the above countries are considered “third-country nationals”.
