PhD Student Position in Ultra Dense Wireless Access Networks The School of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at KTH

The School of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm announces one PhD Student position in Ultra Dense Wireless Access Networks
KTH in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Sweden’s technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes architecture, industrial management and urban planning. There are a total of just over 14,000 first and second level students and more than 1,700 doctoral students. KTH has almost 4,600 employees.
The school of Information and Communication Technology, ICT, conducts research and education at leading international level in material physics, photonics/optics, electronic systems, integrated devices and circuits, as well as communication systems. Our research activity encompasses both basic and applied level. We offer a wide spectrum of educational programs at undergraduate, masters and doctoral level. The ICT School fosters close collaboration with Swedish and international companies and research institutes as well as surrounding associations such as Kista Science City.
The position is with the Radio Systems Laboratory at the Department of Communication Systems (CoS) at Electrum, Kista.

Description of the position

The traffic demand for wireless and mobile services is predicted to increase exponentially in the coming years. Ultra dense deployment of small cells is considered to be one of the solutions to fulfill the skyrocketing capacity demand over the next decade. The area involves the development of deployment strategies for future ultra-dense wireless access networks. A key challenge is that future access networks are expected to provide several orders of magnitude higher capacity at today’s cost levels. The research involves investigating and contributing to radio resource management algorithms, performance evaluation, cost analysis, and the analysis of spectrum options for the ultra-dense networks. Part of the research is expected to be done within the EU FP7-project METIS.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold, or by August 2013, receive an MSc degree in Communication Systems, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related area. The candidate should have strong analytical skills, willingness to innovate. He/she should have course work and experience in Wireless Communications, Networking, or Signal Processing. Experience in system-level performance analysis or radio resource management is an advantage. The evaluation will be based on the scientific quality of the candidate in accordance with the needs of the project. The applicant should be highly motivated and able to work independently and perform critical thinking and analysis. Excellent academic credentials, written and spoken English proficiency, communication and team-work skills are expected.
