http://www.ricam.oeaw.ac.at/people/page/sini/FWF-Project-Abstract.pdf

Two PhD positions at the Inverse Problems group in RICAM, Austria

Description of the positions
Two PhD positions are open in the group "Inverse Problems", at Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (RICAM), Linz, Austria. These positions are part of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) project:[P22341-N18] "Electromagnetic Scattering by complex interfaces", led by Dr. M. Sini.
The starting date is estimated for September 1st 2010 or as soon as possible but not later than January 1st 2011. The positions are limited to three years. The research is funded according to the FWF salary guidelines. The starting gross income (approx. 1851.00 Euros) includes social security (pension), health care coverage, and unemployment benefits. Some additional funds will also be available for research purposes (conference participation, research visits abroad, etc.). The working language is English.

Requirements
For both the positions a Master's degree in fields related to the mathematical analysis of partial differential equations is required and an advanced knowledge in computational mathematics (as boundary finite elements) is highly appreciated.

Application material to be sent to mourad.sini@oeaw.ac.at
1. A detailled CV, describing yourself, your research interests, achievements etc.
2. The scanned images of the Master's degree certi¯cat as well as the academic transcripts.
3. Two letters of recommendation (one of them from your Master thesis advisor).

An abstract of the project
Scattering or boundary value problems for complex interfaces have at least two di®erent origins:
I. They are approximate models for penetrable obstacles where the material of the interior part of the obstacle is so highly reflecting and does allow only week absorbtion. Hence the transmission conditions across the interface of the obstacle are replaced by surface impedance type boundary conditions.
II. Artificial materials, distributed along the surface of the obstacle, are used to produce more (or less) scattering by the obstacle. These artificial materials are modeled by coefficients appearing in the 'modified' transmission conditions.
A complex interface is characterized by its location, its geometry and the material distributed in/on it.
We are interested in studying the inverse problems associated to these two situations for some models described by the Maxwell systems. We divide our study into two interdependent parts:
a.) Inverse problems, In this case, we are given exterior measurements (boundary or scattering measurements) and we want to reconstruct the unknown complex interface.
b.) Design problems. In this case, we know the (shape of the) obstacle and we want to design it in such a way to be more (or less, if needed) visible from exterior measurements. We are interested by designs using surface or body coatings.

Call for Applications For Fellows Year 2011-2012

What is the API Fellowships Program?

It is a fellowships program that provides a grant to successful applicants to carry out a project during the fellowship period of one month to one year in a country or countries (currently confined to Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand).

API Mission Statement

Public Intellectuals are those—academics, researchers, media professionals, artists, creative writers, NGO activists, social workers, public servants and others with moral authority—who are committed to working for the betterment of society by applying their professional knowledge, wisdom and experience.

The Nippon Foundation Fellowships for Asian Public Intellectuals (API Fellowships Program) is designed to stimulate the creation of a pool of such intellectuals in the region. They aim to promote mutual learning among Asian public intellectuals and to contribute to the growth of public spaces in which effective responses to regional needs can be generated.

What are API Senior Fellowships and API Fellowships? (Categories of Fellowships)

The fellowships are offered under two categories: API Senior Fellowships and API Fellowships.

The API Senior Fellowships are meant for those with an established track record as a public intellectual and who are at least 40 years of age, as of August 31, 2010. The fellowship period should be a minimum of one month to a maximum of twelve months in up to four of the countries participating in the API Fellowships Program (Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand).

The API Fellowships are for those under 40 years of age as of August 31, 2010. The fellowship period should be a minimum of four months to a maximum of twelve months in one or two of the countries participating in the API Fellowships Program (Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand).

For both categories, the fellowship period must be continuous and the minimum period of visit to a project country is one month and cannot include the native country or country of residence.

What can I do as a project?

The project may take several forms: a research paper, a film, a series of journalistic articles, data gathering, building networks, a work of art, etc.; but it must fulfill the following three conditions:

  • It must NOT be part of your regular employment output;

Ph.D. Studentship Statistical methods in the economic evaluation of health interventions

    Ph.D. Studentship, October 2010 start:

    >> Statistical methods in the economic evaluation of health interventions <<

We have one three or four-year studentship joint funded by the MRC and the University of Bristol, to allow study of statistical methods in the economic evaluation of health interventions.

Two possible projects, to be supervised by Drs Chris Metcalfe & Will Hollingworth:

[1] The net benefit regression framework for estimating cost effectiveness in randomised controlled trials.

Incremental net benefit is a measure of cost-effectiveness that can be estimated using standard regression models. Consequently there is the potential to take those statistical methods developed within the regression framework and apply them to cost-effectiveness analysis. For example, it may be possible to obtain an unbiased estimate of cost-effectiveness in those patients who adhere to their allocated treatment, and to obtain accurate standard errors for data collected in cluster randomised trials.

[2] Optimising the statistical precision of economic evaluations conducted alongside randomised controlled trials.

The sample sizes of randomised controlled trials are almost always based on achieving statistical power for comparisons of clinical outcome rather than comparisons of cost-effectiveness. It is often assumed that randomised controlled trials are severely underpowered on economic outcomes, but there is little empirical evidence to substantiate this. Potential elements of this project include a post hoc examination of statistical power to detect an important difference in cost-effectiveness in published trials, and a prospective study predicting statistical precision in cost-effectiveness estimates based on pilot cost-effectiveness data.

The successful applicant will be based at the School of Social and Community Medicine at the University of Bristol, and will work within the MRC funded ConDuCT hub for clinical trials methodology research. The four-year studentship allows a year of training in clinical trials research for a student moving from a different area of application.

For more details and the application procedure please see the ConDuCT Ph.D. programme prospectus, available under “Other funding opportunities” on our postgraduate opportunities web page:

    <http://www.epi.bris.ac.uk/postgrad/pg.htm>

Please get your application to us by Tuesday 6th July to ensure an October 2010 start. Later applications will be considered if the studentship is still available.

    Post-doc Chemistry, In Nice, France

A two-year postdoctoral position is available in the Ion Channel Genetics team at IPMC -

TIANP (UMR CNRS 6097) located at the Science faculty in Parc Varlose in Nice, south of

    France ( http://www.unice.fr/tianp).

Subject: TASK K+ channel contribution in breathing adaptation to O2, CO2 and

    pH changes

    Context of the study

The chemosensitivity is an essential property of the respiratory system to permanently adapt

its activity to the needs of the body. Specialized sensors at the periphery (mainly carotid

bodies) and at the central level (specialized nuclei in the brainstem) are involved in

monitoring arterial blood CO2 and O2 pressures as well as pH. Defects of central

chemoreception are implicated in respiratory pathologies such as sleep apnea syndromes,

periodic breathing in high altitude and drug- or anesthesia-induced respiratory depression.

The congenital central hypoventilation syndrome is a severe hereditary form of central

breathing chemosensitivity in human. The brainstem topology of respiratory nuclei is

relatively well known. Yet, we don't precisely know what are the neurons directly involved in

chemosensitivity and even less the exact molecular identities of the chemoreceptors.

Background K+ channels (K2P) of the TASK family display functional characteristics

including pH and reactive oxygen species (ROS) sensitivities that make them good CO2 and

    O2 sensors candidates.

In a recently published work, we have identified TASK2 as the molecular O2 sensor in

retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN) and proposed that its activation by hypoxia generated ROS is

the mechanism by which central hypoxia-induced ventilatory depression takes place

    (Gestreau et al 2010).

    Objectives

The project is aimed at the characterization of the molecular mechanisms regulating the CO2

and O2 sensing in the brainstem and involved in the adaptation of breathing to the blood gases

relying on the unique model of TASK mutant mice.

We have produced mice invalidated for the three TASK channel genes task1 (kcnk3), task2

(kcnk5) and task3 (kcnk9) as well as double knockout task1-3 and task2-3. The postdoctoral

fellow will develop patch-clamp studies on brainstem slices from these mouse models.

Therefore, a good experience in electrophysiology, and possibly in electrophysiology on

    slices would be greatly appreciated.
