The DB & NLP group of the CS lab. of the University of Tours, France, invites applications for a fully-funded 3-year PhD position in the area of data warehousing, data mining, analytics and exploratory search, starting in September 2014 in the nice city of Blois (http://en.blois.fr/) located in the Unesco World Heritage area of the "Loire valley". The research area is that of interactive exploratory analysis of huge amounts of data and research activities will include the empirical study, modeling and benchmarking of exploratory analyses. Experimental validation will be carried out in the context of a regional project aiming at the interactive analysis of open data, to study the energy vulnerability of households and territories. Applicants should have a M.Sc. in computer science and possess a very good knowledge of BI (Business Intelligence) related theory and technics (data warehousing, OLAP, data mining, information retrieval), user-centric approaches (recommendation, personalization) and development. Experience with open data will be a plus. Good proficiency in English is mandatory. French language skills are desirable but not mandatory. The monthly gross salary is 1685.43 Euro. The Department of Electronics and Automotive Advanced Technology (DELTA), Renault offers CIFRE entitled "Study of electrical insulation systems used in motor vehicles Electrical taking into account their specific environment, to ensure the desired life of the electric motor for future generation.
Background:
The current level of tension and its probable increase in the near future, the use of devices power electronics and the specific constraints they generate (as a voltage, steep edges, high frequencies, etc..), not to mention the operating conditions specific to the application (profiles mission thermal cycles, vibratory stress, etc) make the study of Electrical Insulation System (SIE) motors for electric vehicles (VE) a new field of investigation. Indeed, to ensure the duration Life sought, it is vital to understand the mechanisms of degradation of the dielectric insulation of cables, motor winding and power components. Among the risks, we must consider include:
- Breakdown between turns (same phase or different phases) and turns-frame;
- Failure of impedance of distribution lines accompanied by a sharp surge in response to reflections of Electromagnetic wave;
- Non-negligible parasitic capacitances and forehead steep causing a power surge at the entrance of the winding and intense use of the electrical insulation;
- Inhomogeneous distribution of tension in the coil.
Problem:
The whole question is at what level of exposure to risk of failure is the application. By this I mean, the voltage level is it - given a few peculiar "Inverter - can trigger mechanisms of insulation breakdown, discharge partial (DP) and corona discharge? The answer to that question the whole strategy of choice and design of electrical systems that will be used. As part of this work, we try to answer this question. She will consider innovative methods of detecting these phenomena, developed in a different context (aerospace, defense, rail) and seem particularly interesting (radio frequency detection). After studies at the Laboratory, will seek to deploy detection methods on an engine test bench consists of a Renault engine and its electronic
power.

Description:
The PhD student will make use of the extensive data sets to identify gene and protein interactions that might be of importance for the development and progression of the disease. Potential interactions and mechanisms of regulation will be validated by the student using a variety of laboratory techniques such as analysis of expression and epigenetic modifications, promoter activity assays, transcription factor binding sites, co-immunoprecipitations in in vitro model systems (cell culture) as well as in tissue samples. For validated targets, blood/plasma based assays for early detection, tumour classification, risk assessment and treatment decisions will be developed.

Bergonié Cancer Institute is an internationally recognized research institution with a dynamic research, a good clinical environment, an extensive infrastructural and core facility support. Scientific research at the Bergonié Cancer Institute covers the full spectrum of cancer research, from basic studies on tumour biology to clinical trials and epidemiology. The basic scientists are integrated into an INSERM unit (U916) whose goals are to identify and validate new gene signatures and drug targets. To this end, three approaches are developed: Identification of molecular targets, Preclinical and Clinical validation. Individual scientists and clinicians work together in groups mostly based on tumour type: sarcoma, breast cancer, colorectal cancer and lymphoma.
Scientific description: The aim of the research project is to investigate the role of ionic channels, intracellular calcium and pH in the regulation of the death receptors-mediated signaling pathways by using a wide range of technologies including patch-clamp electrophysiology, calcium imaging, molecular and cellular physiology and biochemical techniques. Biological materials used in this study will include lymphocytes issued from blood samples of healthy donors and patients with lymphocyte malignancies, and cell lines.
Position: 24 months postdoctoral fellowship (starting January, 2011) funded by the National Cancer Institute (INCa). The wages will be around 2000 €/month. This position is seeking candidates interested in pursuing an academic research career.
Profile: Ideal candidates must have a recent Ph.D. degree and/or M.D. with substantial research experience in biochemistry, electrophysiology, molecular, cellular or cancer biology, or a related discipline. Previous work in the field of cancer biology is preferred. A good expertise in the area of apoptosis/cell death or immunology will be appreciated.
Successful candidate will lead an innovative and integrated project at the interface of electrophysiology and biology. Opportunities to be part of several ongoing collaborations will enhance the opportunity for publications.
Location: University of Bordeaux, Bergonié Cancer Institute, Bordeaux, France. Bordeaux, capital of Aquitania, combines high-level research laboratories and a unique quality of life in a renowned cultural setting.

occurrence of absence epilepsy ? A calcium imaging and two photon microscopy approach
in a genetic rat model”.
The objective of the project is to determine whether absence epilepsy is associated with
the development of an anomaly of the cortical glial network and/or a dysfunction of
neuron-glial relationships during cortical maturation.
The program is developed in collaboration with 4 teams including neurobiologists
specialized in epilepsy and calcium imaging (I Guillemain and M Albrieux) and physicists
specialized in two-photon imaging (JC Vial and B Van der Sanden).
The candidate will focus on experiments that will determine the functional aspects of the
glial network and its relationship with the neural network by measuring spontaneous and
induced calcium movements and cell synchrony on cortical slices of epileptic rat pups and
controls of the same age. The implication of neuro- and glio-transmission in the observed
events will be studied using specific pharmacological tools.

The « Institut des Maladies Neurodégénératives » (IMN – Institute of Neurodegenerative Disorders) is a research unit under the guardianship of the CNRS and the University Victor Segalen-Bordeaux 2. It supports close links with the University Hospital of Bordeaux. The laboratory, featuring 95 persons, is an integral part of the Neurocampus, the Bordeaux Excellence center for Neuroscience. The laboratory is organized into 7 independent scientific teams.
MISSION :
The post-doc will be in charge, under the supervision of the project leader and in close collaboration with the other project members, of a project aiming at restoring motor performances in the Parkinson’s disease gold standard, the MPTP-treated non-human primate, through the development of brain-machine interface.
This project is supported by European contract (NEUWALK) aiming at characterizing the electrophysiologial and cinematic parameters of a “normal” state, at developing the movement analysis methodology, at performing the surgical implantation of a “smart” stimulator invented and developed by our partners in the European network on the parkinsonian monkeys and at quantifying the behavioral consequences.
ACTVITIES :
Ø To develop protocols and adapt the experimental conditions in order to answer to the project goals
Ø To jointly run electrophysiological investigations (chronic EMG recordings, tridimensional kinematics, cortical and subcortical multi-single unit telemetric recordings) in a pathophysiological context (macaque model of Parkinson’s disease)
Ø To share and exploit the data with the European partners in order to better define and improve the characteristics of the spinal stimulator.

A two-year postdoctoral position is available in the Ion Channel Genetics team at IPMC - TIANP (UMR CNRS 6097) located at the Science faculty in Parc Varlose in Nice, south of France ( http://www.unice.fr/tianp). Subject: TASK K+ channel contribution in breathing adaptation to O2, CO2 and pH changes Context of the study The chemosensitivity is an essential property of the respiratory system to permanently adapt its activity to the needs of the body. Specialized sensors at the periphery (mainly carotid bodies) and at the central level (specialized nuclei in the brainstem) are involved in monitoring arterial blood CO2 and O2 pressures as well as pH. Defects of central chemoreception are implicated in respiratory pathologies such as sleep apnea syndromes, periodic breathing in high altitude and drug- or anesthesia-induced respiratory depression. The congenital central hypoventilation syndrome is a severe hereditary form of central breathing chemosensitivity in human. The brainstem topology of respiratory nuclei is relatively well known. Yet, we don't precisely know what are the neurons directly involved in chemosensitivity and even less the exact molecular identities of the chemoreceptors. Background K+ channels (K2P) of the TASK family display functional characteristics including pH and reactive oxygen species (ROS) sensitivities that make them good CO2 and O2 sensors candidates. In a recently published work, we have identified TASK2 as the molecular O2 sensor in retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN) and proposed that its activation by hypoxia generated ROS is the mechanism by which central hypoxia-induced ventilatory depression takes place (Gestreau et al 2010). Objectives The project is aimed at the characterization of the molecular mechanisms regulating the CO2 and O2 sensing in the brainstem and involved in the adaptation of breathing to the blood gases relying on the unique model of TASK mutant mice. We have produced mice invalidated for the three TASK channel genes task1 (kcnk3), task2 (kcnk5) and task3 (kcnk9) as well as double knockout task1-3 and task2-3. The postdoctoral fellow will develop patch-clamp studies on brainstem slices from these mouse models. Therefore, a good experience in electrophysiology, and possibly in electrophysiology on slices would be greatly appreciated. The INSERM U866 Research Centre “Lipids, Nutrition, Cancer”
has an open position for
a Post-Doc
(PhD in Biochemistry or Biological Sciences)
For a transversal project in the INSERM Research Centre to improve the outcome
of cancer therapy by testing new potential treatments against human tumors (colon,
and breast cancer) with high level of efficacy and low toxicity.
Despite aggressive therapies, resistance of many tumors to established treatment
procedures still constitutes a major problem in cancer therapy. For example, the
therapeutic strategy of colorectal cancer is mainly based on surgery and a palliative
chemotherapy with 5-FU/folinic acid associated with Irinotecan.
However this strategy is not very successful, mainly due to establishment of a strong
resistance of cancer cells against the cytotoxic drugs, and to metastatic invasion.
The overall aim of the proposed transversal project in the INSERM U866 Unit “Lipids,
Nutrition, Cancer” is to evaluate: 1) the effect of polyphenols and new chemicals
analogues on the tumor cell plasma membrane, 2) and to determine novel cellular targets
in the cellular lipid metabolism which is implicated in the chemotherapeutic response and
in the Multi-Drug Resistance.

This project is part of a large scale program involving several teams in the INSERM Unit
Beside basis support from INSERM and French Ministery of research, this program is
supported by the “Conseil Régional de Bourgogne”, the vitivinicultural sector, the NACre
(Nutrition-Food Cancer research) network, the “Cancer League” (Côte d'Or committee) and
INCa (National Cancer Institute and Easter France Cancer cluster).
This position will be available in September-October 2010
and offers a competitive salary (2,500 euros per month).

PhD position in Nice, France
PhD position (CNRS/PACA funding) available from September 2010 in the Institute of
Developmental Biology and Cancer (UNSA CNRS UMR 6543), in the group of Dr Franck
Borgese at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis / CNRS, Nice, France.

Our project will focus on the regulation of ion channels involved in cancer cell behaviour
(apoptosis resistance, extra cellular matrix adhesion and degradation, motility, proliferation).
Recently, we have demonstrated that a unique tumour biomarker, the sigma-1 receptor
(Sig1R), was functionally associated to Cl- and K+ channels in lung cancer and leukaemia
cells. We have shown that the over-expression of Sig1R in cancer cells enhances cell
apoptotic resistance through a decrease of volume-regulated Cl- channels activation kinetics
(Renaudo et al., 2007; Le Guennec et al., 2008). Moreover, exogenous sigma ligands inhibit
cell cycle through a K+ channel / p27kip1-dependent pathway (Renaudo et al. 2004).
The project will deal on the molecular mechanisms associating the Sig1R to ion channels
aberrantly expressed in leukaemia and breast cancer cells, in relation to their
aggressiveness state. Finally, in vivo significance of the described mechanisms will be
explored in a mouse metastatic model.
Main technical approaches: Molecular cell biology, genetics, microscopy imagery and
electrophysiology (patch-clamp).
We are seeking highly talented and self-motivated candidates. A background in the field of
electrophysiology and cell physiology will be appreciated. The position will be available on
September 2010.
