Job description: The Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf e.V. (FZD) is an institution with more than 800 employees. It will become new member of the Helmholtz Association as of January 2011 and is then named Helmholtzzentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). It is engaged in basic and application-oriented research like cancer research, nuclear safety research and advanced materials research. These works are realised in close cooperation with universities, non-university institutes and industry. Further information can be found at http://www.fzd.de. The Institute of Safety Research offers a position as a

PhD student Material Science

from 01.02.2011 for three years. The salary is according to the German regulations "Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst (TVöD)".

Requirements:

- University Diploma or Master in material science or physics - Interest in the experimental characterisation of materials (microstructure and mechanical properties) -Knowledge in powder metallurgy -Fluent in English

Tasks:

- Powder metallurgic manufacturing of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS-) materials for applications in energy technology - Characterisation of the materials at the nm scale (TEM, SANS, Atom Probe) -Investigation of the influence of ODS particles on mechanical properties -Investigation of the influence of ion irradiation on the microstructure and on mechanical properties.

The production of ODS steels is realised on the powder metallurgic route covering high energy milling of the raw powders, compacting by spark plasma sintering (SPS) and appropriate after-treatment. The work is performed in close cooperation with the Fraunhofer-Institut IFAM Dresden. On the one hand, the characterisation is focussed to the nm scale (size, distribution and composition of the particles). On the other hand the influence of the ODS particles on the mechanical properties and the irradiation behaviour of the materials have also to be investigated. The work is to contribute to an optimisation of the materials’ properties relevant for energy applications through an improved understanding of the mechanisms at the nanoscale. The collaboration within an European project (starting in 2011) is foreseen.

Please address your comprehensive application with the Registration-No. 47E/2010 by January 10, 2011 to
