Intention
‘Leibniz – DAAD Research Fellowships’ is a new programme implemented by the ‘ Leibniz Association’ (Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz), and the ‘German Academic Exchange Service’ (DAAD). The fellowships offer highly-qualified recent foreign postdocs the opportunity to conduct special research at institutes of the Leibniz-Association in Germany.
DAAD
The DAAD is a joint organisation of Germany’s higher education institutions and is mandated to promote international academic relations, especially through exchanges of students, academics and scientists. It is the internationalisation agency of Germany’s higher education institutions and simultaneously serves as a "mediator organisation” in the government’s foreign policy, European policy, development policy and higher education policy. With a total budget of almost 348 million euro in 2009 the DAAD run over 250 programmes which were predominately funded by Germany’s federal government. Leibniz Association
The Leibniz Association is the umbrella organisation for 87 institutions conducting research or providing scientific infrastructure. Some 7,100 scientists and scholars work in the humanities and social sciences, economics, spatial and life sciences as well as in mathematics, the natural and engineering sciences and in environmental research. Altogether, more than 16,000 people are employed at Leibniz Institutes, which have an annual budget of 1,3 billion euro. Leibniz-DAAD Research Fellows can do their research at one of the Leibniz-Institutes which are covered in the following (five) sections:
- Section A: Humanities and Educational Research/ Geisteswissenschaften und Bildungsforschung
- Section B: Economics, Social and Spatial Sciences/Wirtschaft- und Sozialwissenschaften, Raumwissenschaften
- Section C: Life Sciences/ Lebenswissenschaften
- Section D: Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Engineering/ Mathematik, Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaften
- Section E: Environmental Research/ Umweltwissenschaften
Grants
Grants for postdoc studies can be awarded for up to a maximum of 12 months. The grant includes:
- a monthly instalment of 1,840,- EUR;
- a monthly subsidy of 58 EUR for the insurance for health, accident and personal/private liability in Germany (53 EUR per month has to be covered by the fellowship holder);
- a two-month German language course (if desired).
Application Requirements
At the time of their application, applicants for a Leibniz-DAAD Research Fellowship should
- be able to prove their outstanding study or research achievements,
- have completed their studies with a PhD or equivalent degree (no more than two years should have passed since graduation),
- have an excellent knowledge of English.
A knowledge of German is advantageous.
Special note for applicants from the field of medicine: A university degree is considered equivalent to the German medical practice licence, the Approbation – that is proof of at least seven years of medical training and the licence to practice medicine in the home country.

To complete your application, please enclose the following papers and documents:
- abstract of the doctoral/PhD thesis (max. 3 pages),
- list of publications if any,
- complete curriculum vitae,
- two letters of reference from senior academics from the applicants field,
- copies of academic degree certificates,
- recent photograph (attached to the application form),
- proof of English language skills (TOEFL 550/213/80; IELTS: 5.5),
- description of the research project and
- detailed work plan and schedule.
Please note: By applying for a fellowship within the Leibniz-DAAD Research Fellowships Programme you give your consent to the DAAD to forward your documents and your personal details to Leibniz Association and its relevant institutions. The DAAD and the Leibniz Association as well as the Leibniz Institutions will not pass on your details to third parties.

Applications must be submitted to the DAAD on or before the closing date.
Closing date is 20 June 2011.
