The Dynamic and Distributed Information Systems Group at the University of Zurich

Responsibilities
Childhood obesity is a rising and alarming epidemic, particularly among children with a lower socioeconomic background. Despite the clear need for effective prevention approaches, existing programmes have often failed to work among, or are not able to reach, those with a lower socioeconomic status. We need a radically new prevention approach, one that is both theory and evidence based and applies to low-income families. This project aims to do so by intervening at the right moment (when children start to eat the normal family meal and snacks), with the right people (low-income and overweight mothers), and with the right risk behaviours (consumption of sugar sweetened beverages and snacks) and underlying determinants (automatic parenting processes). It specifically focuses on food parenting practices and will examine whether mothers who receive (feeding) parenting support through mobile applications and/or group meetings at paediatric clinics will have children who eat more healthily and have a lower weight. As a PhD you will be part of a larger project team in which people from the creative industry (app developers) and clinical practice (group leaders at paediatric clinics) are employed. In this project qualitative research techniques (i.e. focus groups at the start of the project) will be combined with a further quantitative research approach.

Work environment
The research project will be conducted within the Developmental Psychopathology research programme of the Behavioural Science Institute. The BSI is a research institute of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Radboud University. The BSI Graduate School is recognized by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and provides a two-year Research Master’s programme and a PhD training programme. The Behavioural Science Institute is very well-funded and has over 200 researchers conducting research in three areas: (1) development and learning, (2) psychopathology, health, and well-being, and (3) social processes and communication. The BSI has state-of-the-art research facilities for observational studies, experiments, eye-tracking studies, EEG measurements and GSR recording, psychobiological research, and behavioural measurements in real and 3D virtual environments. The Faculty of Social Sciences is one of the largest faculties at Radboud University. The faculty’s ambition is to become one of the top social science institutes in Europe, providing high-quality research and study programmes that rank among the best in the Netherlands.

What we expect from you
preferably a Research Master’s degree in psychology, pedagogics, communication or health sciences. However, candidates who completed a regular Master’s degree in one of the mentioned disciplines and have relevant research experience are also invited to apply;
experience in behavioural research, who can easily build a bridge between practice and science;
good communication skills, has affinity with the target audience of low-income mothers, is creative and has experience with statistical analyses (i.e. SPSS, R or STATA) and scientific writing;
some experience with app development would be a plus (to liaise more easily with our creative industry partner that will build the app).

What we have to offer
employment: 1,0 fte;
in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
the starting salary is €2,125 per month on a full-time basis, the salary will increase to €2,779 per month in the fourth year (P-scale);
you will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years;
as part of the contract, you will participate in teaching for approximately 10% of your work time;
you will be classified as a PhD candidate (promovendus) in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO).

PhD in neuromoduation, Glasgow, UK

We are looking for a PhD candidate to work on a project Neuromodulation: Integrating rTMS with Neurofeedback
in a Neurorehabilitation group at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, UK under supervision of Dr Aleksandra Vuckovic and Professor Gregor Thut.

Project Summary

Neurofeedback and repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) are well established techniques for cortical neuromodulation (neuromodulation=influencing how the brain works). Neurofeedback relies on the voluntary modulation of brain activity while rTMS requires an external stimulus to modulate the activity of the brain. Both neuromodulation modalities can be used to up-regulate insufficient activity or to down-regulate excessive brain activity thereby affecting the underlying neurophysiological processes such as attention, motor control, pain, depression, etc.
Based on the effect of neurofeedback and rTMS, it is believed that they share a basic neurophysiological mechanism but systematic analysis and comparison of the methods has never been performed. Likewise, as these two methods are not mutually exclusive, it is hypothesised that their combination may result in enhanced neuromodulatory effect.
The aim of this experimentally based project will be to
i) understand the relation between neuromodulatory effect of neurofeedback and rTMS
ii) create and test an automatic system for neurofeedback guided rTMS  that will be used to modulate activity of cortical areas such as motor or parietal cortex, with application in motor control (and related neurological deficits such as spasm central neuropathic pain) and spatial awareness.
This can lead to creation of novel neurorehabilitation protocols for treatments of motor, sensory and cognitive impairments in neurological conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury and Parkinson disease.

In the context of the European Research Council Grant “RESHAPE: REstoring the Self with embodiable HAnd ProsthesEs”, we are seeking two outstanding Post-Doc scientists and two highly-motivated PhD students to join us in developing new tools and methods to improve the embodiment of robotic hand prostheses and study the related brain processes.

Post-Doc ideal candidates should

Infill Developments: HOME (Housing Outcomes, Metrics and Evaluation)
 
A PhD scholarship is available for an exceptional candidate to join a large multi-disciplinary international and multi institution research group led by Professor Ralph Horne investigating the provision, design and lived-experience of infill apartments. The candidate will undertake research as part of the Australian Research Council (ARC) funded Linkage Project Infill Developments: HOME (Housing Outcomes, Metrics and Evaluation), which aims to link housing outcomes to metrics and evaluation of housing design in the rapidly growing infill multi-residential sector. 
 
The project is set across four global cities (Melbourne, Perth, Barcelona and London), and will analyse good design and how this is produced and experienced. It aims to address the significant problem of design quality in multi-residential housing and outcomes include robust design evaluation methods and transition strategies for cities, allowing city stakeholders to tailor policies and actions that shape the lives of people in Australian cities.
 
The 3-year project involves collaboration between RMIT University, University of Melbourne, University of Western Australia and University College London and a range of key industry and government partners.
 
We seek an outstanding PhD candidate to work on the qualitative social science component of this project. The successful candidate will have a strong academic record, with a minimum of first class honours in a relevant discipline (e.g. sociology, human/urban geography, urban studies, etc., including a research component equating to one full time semester of study), or equivalent research experience. The candidate will also have a strong interest in housing and urban development.
 
The successful PhD candidate will join the Centre for Urban Research (CUR) at RMIT University. The CUR is one of Australia’s leading centres for multi-disciplinary research on urban questions. Our group of more than 45 researchers includes many experts in their international fields. Collectively CUR staff produce new critical and applied knowledge for scholarly, policy, and civic communities that seeks to understand urban life and improve how we manage cities and provide for inclusive and sustainable urbanisation. We do this with enthusiasm and commitment to a better global urban future.
 
The candidate will be hosted by RMIT University and will be based in Melbourne. They will spend two intensive study periods in Barcelona undertaking fieldwork and receive mentorship from the international research team.
 
This is a full-time scholarship that includes an annual living allowance of AUD $28,849 (2015 rate, indexed annually). This position is open to International students and includes an international fee-waiver. Scholarship commencement dates negotiable.
