PH.D. AND PROFESSIONAL TRAINING
IN THE FIELD OF EU EXTERNAL ACTION (2010-2013)
OFFER FOR YOUNG RESEARCHERS AND PRACTITIONERS
EXACT IS an EU wide Ph.D. and professional training programme on EU External Action for university graduates and researchers in an early stage of their professional and academic careers.
EXACT CONSISTS of nine partner institutions.
EXACT OFFERS a unique synergy between:
intensive academic training in the field of EU External Action, leading to a `bi-national' double Ph.D. ("co-tutelle") issued by two universities;
the opportunity to gain professional experience in two European Think Tanks dealing with EU foreign policy, and
Marie Curie funding on the basis of a full employment contract2.
Additionally, participants will benefit from the design of their own individual research projects, from substantial professional skills training and the broad EXACT network of contacts across academia and the private sector, thus, improving and increasing career prospects in growing and highly competitive European and national job markets.
EXACT RECRUITS 12 participants
of any nationality and age
from different relevant disciplines dealing with EU foreign policy such as political science, law, and economics
who have obtained their first degree entitling her/him to embark on a doctorate no earlier than May 2008
to be trained from October 2010 onwards
for a period of 3 years

EXACT FORESEES three phases of in-depth academic and professional training:
PHASE I (Oct 2010 – Feb 2011), concentrating on academic training based at the University of Cologne. It aims at imparting basic knowledge about EU External Action and its institutional architecture. Interdisciplinary expertise will be provided by four renowned Visiting Scientists.
PHASE II (Mar 2011 – Mar 2012), focusing on professional skills. The participants will take up residence at two of the partner think tanks (one located in Brussels). Phase II serves as an opportunity to gain work experience as well as to integrate in professional networks. Opportunities for further Ph.D. research will be provided.
PHASE III (Apr 2012 – Sep 2013), offering local Ph.D. training at one of the three Universities involved and providing the framework for finalising the individual research projects leading to a bi-national double Ph.D. degree ("co-tutelle").
