ANNOUNCEMENT OF COMPETITION FOR ADMISSION TO DOCTORAL (PhD) POSITIONS IN THE FACULTY OF SCIENCES
ACADEMIC YEAR 2010/2011

Available positions

The Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa (hereafter "Scuola") announces a competition based on work to date and entrance exams (hereafter, "Competition"), divided in two sessions, spring and autumn, for the 2010/2011 academic year for 34 doctoral (PhD) positions in the Faculty of Sciences in the following academic areas:

5 positions in Molecular Biophysics, with the collaboration of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT);
4 positions in Chemistry;
8 positions in Physics;
3 positions in Condensed Matter Physics, with the collaboration of the Fondazione "Silvio Tronchetti Provera" and the Regione Toscana;
7 positions in Mathematics;
3 positions in Mathematics for Industrial Technologies or for Finance, with the collaboration of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) and the Regione Toscana;
4 positions in Neuroscience, with the collaboration of the Regione Toscana.

Admission requirements

The following requisites are necessary to apply to the Competition:

the candidate must have completed a 2nd-cycle university degree or equivalent by 31 October 2010;
the candidate must be under 30 years of age as of 31 October 2010;
the candidate must not have been subject to the disciplinary measure of "expulsion" from the Scuola provided for by the Internal and Academic Regulations;
It is strongly recommended that candidates from countries outside the European Union take the ETS GRE – Subject Test within the application deadline given in this announcement. Detailed information can be found in the Competition regulations attached to this announcement under letter "A".

Application and deadline

Application for admission to the Competition, prepared on plain paper in the format of the facsimile attached to this announcement, must arrive to the Scuola:

within Saturday 20 March 2010 for the spring session;
within Monday 20 September 2010 for the autumn session.
Late arrival of the application and related materials, no matter what the cause, even if posted by the deadline, will result in non-admission to the Competition.

Candidates outside Italy may send their application form by fax to the number +39.050.563513.

The candidate must attach the following to his/her application:

his/her curriculum vita reflecting all study and work experiences;
certificate (transcript) indicating all courses/exams completed at university, with final marks, in Italian, English, French, German or Spanish;
certificate indicating the completed degree, in Italian, English, French, German or Spanish. If the degree is to be completed after the date of mailing the application, the certificate can be presented on the day of the exam. Candidates who are European Union citizens may present a simple declaration of said degree(s) in accordance with Pres. Decree no. 403 dated 20 Oct. 1998;
a copy of the undergraduate thesis, when available;
at least one recommendation letter from a qualified scholar in the candidate's field;
a proposed research project in line with the research areas of the Scuola as indicated at: http://www.sns.it/it/laboratori/laboratoriscienze, where research groups and laboratories of the Scuola are listed along with their activities;
any other information which the candidate believes useful for his/her application;
copy of a valid identification document.
Admission to exams, calendar and final ranking of Candidates

Candidates whose degrees and work to date are evaluated positively will be admitted to the written and/or oral exams which will take place at the Scuola on the following dates:

SPRING SESSION

oral exam only for every field, starting on Tuesday 20 April 2010

AUTUMN SESSION

written exam only for Mathematics: Monday, 11 October 2010.
oral exam for every field starting from Tuesday, 12 October 2010
Candidates of the spring session whose degrees and work to date have been evaluated positively but who do not pass the oral exams may send written request to the Scuola to participate in the autumn session of the Competition. In this case they will accede directly to the written and/or oral exams of that session.
After each session the President of the Scuola approves the final ranking of qualified candidates and announces the winners who have been admitted to the positions available.

The final ranking of qualified candidates in order of merit is posted on the Official Notice Board of the Scuola and published in the appropriate area of the web site www.sns.it.

Reimbursement of travel expenses

Documented travel expenses will be reimbursed for candidates who, after their degree and work to date have been positively evaluated, sustain exams at the Scuola, up to an overall total of €350 for candidates from within Italy, of €700 for candidates from other countries.

Students' rights

The PhD programs last three years (The PhD program in Molecular Biophysics last four years). Their legal and financial start date is Monday, 1 November 2010.

Competition winners will receive a fellowship of €13,000.00/year net, as well as free meals in the Scuola dining hall.

The Scuola may extend the fellowship for an additional year for justified academic and/or scientific reasons and only if possible within the budget.

Personal data will be entered into the databases of the Scuola and will be used in accordance with legislative decree no. 196 of 30 June 2003 "Protection of Personal Data".
