Post-Doctoral Position – Ecohydrological Partitioning in the Critical Zone

We have an immediate opening for a post-doctoral position to work with a team of scientists on

the NSF-funded Jemez River Basin and Santa Catalina Mountains (JRB-SCM) Critical Zone

Observatory (CZO). The initial appointment will be for one year, with the expectation that the

successful candidate will be reappointed for a second year. The JRB-SCM is designed to

examine the impacts of space-time variability in energy and water flux on coupled critical zone (CZ) processes along two climate gradients; the first is on rhyolitic parent material in the JRB of northern New Mexico and the second is on granite and schist bedrock within the SCM in

southern Arizona. At sites that vary in parent rock, elevation, aspect, slope, soil development,

and vegetation, the JRB-SCM CZO team uses a combination of measurement, modeling, and

experimentation to address the following questions: (1) How does variability in energy input and

related mass flux influence CZ structure and function? (2) How do feedbacks between landscape

evolution and the cycling of water and carbon alter short- and long-term CZ development?

The ecohydrology and hydrologic partitioning (EHP) theme area of the JRB-SCM CZO is

organized to capture linkages between vegetation, hydrology and CZ evolution. To help

coordinate these efforts, we seek a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with a recent

PhD in ecohydrology, terrestrial hydrology, biometeorology, physiological ecology or other

related field. The applicant should have experience in field methods related to ecohydrological

partitioning of water, carbon, and energy fluxes, including familiarity with data, measurements

and instrumentation associated with micro-meteorology, snow depth, sap flow, leaf level

photosynthesis, and soil respiration. Additionally, experience working with (Light Detection

And Ranging) LiDAR data and spatial analysis methods is preferred. Research productivity and

an interest in interdisciplinary research must be evident in the application. Because the post-doc

will coordinate field campaigns with CZO students and faculty, demonstration of strong

leadership and organizational skills are also important, as is the ability to navigate complex

terrain while carrying heavy field equipment.

Applications, questions and inquiries should be sent to Shirley Papuga

(papuga@email.arizona.edu), School of Natural Resources and the Environment, University of

Arizona, PO Box 210043, Tucson, AZ 85721 USA, by 30 November 2010. Applications should

include a CV, a statement of research interests and expertise, and names, phone numbers, and email

addresses of three references. Electronic submissions are preferred. As an equal opportunity

and affirmative action employer, the University of Arizona recognizes the power of a diverse

community and encourages applications from individuals with varied experiences and

backgrounds.

PhD studentship in Statistics at Maastricht University, The Netherlands.

PhD studentship in Statistics at Maastricht University, The Netherlands.
Project: Efficient two-stage design of multilevel intervention studies:
more power for the same price
Job description
This research project, funded by a grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific
Research (NWO), is about efficient design of intervention studies in psychology and
health sciences. Such studies concern the effects of behavioral treatments, such as
smoking prevention in primary school or a therapy for depression. The studies often have
a nested design (patients in health centers, pupils in schools, employees in companies)
with repeated outcome measurements. Sometimes they additionally have a factorial
design to study the combined effects of two treatments. This project is about optimal and
robust design of such studies, in particular about the best sample size at each level
(organisation, person, repeated measure), under cost and power constraints. Part of the
project is about efficiency gains by two-stage and multi-stage design, where interim
analysis after part of the data have been obtained, determines whether the study should be
continued or stopped.
The PhD student will primarily do research, follow courses according to his or her needs
(e.g. advanced statistics, computer programming, Dutch or English language), and do
some teaching at bachelor level (about 10% of the time). The research is applied
mathematical (analytical, numerical, simulation), not empirical. However, its theoretical
results will be illustrated with data from published intervention studies.
Requirements
A master degree in statistics, biometrics, econometrics, psychometrics, or a related field
with a solid training in statistics. Applicants are expected to be familiar with the general
linear model, some matrix algebra, and computer programming (e.g. in Matlab). Further
requirements are good (written and oral) communication skills in English, and an
authorization to work in the European Union.
Further information
This is a four year temporary contract. For further information on the conditions of
employment, the organisation in which the candidate will work, and the application
procedure, see www.academictransfer.com/6462 (vacancy number AT2010.197).

Research

The HKS Indonesia Program develops research projects on key policy challenges facing the country. Building upon the Ash Center’s intellectual capital—with faculty who conduct cutting-edge research on democracy, governance, and development—the HKS Indonesia Program explores both how Indonesia can serve as a model to other democratizing countries and how its political and economic institutions can be reformed to ensure that its fledgling democracy endures and thrives. The Program works closely with Indonesian scholars, policymakers, and business leaders to strengthen policy education and research in Indonesia and link Indonesia to regional and global knowledge networks. Its conferences facilitate the dissemination of research results.
The recently published paper From Reformasi to Institutional Transformation: A Strategic Assessment of Indonesia's Prospects for Growth, Equity, and Democratic Governance was translated by Kompas Publishing Group and sold at Gramedia bookstores in Indonesia under the title Indonesia Menentukan Nasib. The report argues that Indonesia must engage in a thorough process of institutional transformation if it is to shed the legacy of Guided Democracy and the New Order and compete in the new globalized economy.

Executive Education

The HKS Indonesia Program develops custom executive education programs for senior Indonesian policymakers and leaders that are delivered at Harvard Kennedy School and in Indonesia. These programs may include visits to U.S. cities other than Cambridge to provide participants with opportunities to expand their professional networks and to visit sites of successful government innovations.

PhD position di AISSR, deadline 22 October 2010

PhD candidate

1.0 FTE (38hrs/week)
vacancy number 10-2084

‘Comparative labour relations, internationalisation and inequality'
The area is directed by Prof. Jelle Visser (AISSR and the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies (AIAS)), in cooperation with Prof. Herman van de Werfhorst (AISSR and the Amsterdam Centre for Inequality Studies (AMCIS)).
This is an ‘open' advertisement, meaning that applications are invited on the basis of the candidates' own research proposals. Only proposals that fall within the themes of the group's research programme will be considered. Please consult the programme description by following the link 'Institutions, Inequalities and Internationalisation' below.
Within the area of 'Comparative labour relations, internationalisation and inequality' comparison of labour relations (unions, collective bargaining, industrial conflict, minimum wage setting, labour standards) is the main focus of research. Three themes are of particular interest on the present research agenda, but this list is not exhaustive.
1. The explanation of the stagnation of real wages and the rise in inequality in many countries in relation to union power and changes in collective bargaining and minimum wage setting. This can be studied cross-sectionally and chronologically, at the aggregate level (entire economies, for particular sectors, and at the level of firms), for instance with the help of the European company survey.
2. The role and diffusion of labour standards in developing economies in relation to economic and social development, competitive advantage and narrowing income differences between poor and rich countries.
3. Regional integration (in different areas of the world) and the development of social policies and transnational labour relations.
The research makes use of various quantitative databases, such as the Database on Institutional Characteristics of Trade Unions, Wage Setting, State Intervention and Social Pacts in 34 countries between1960 and 2009 (ICTWSS), which can be accessed at the AIAS website, databases at ILO, OECD, the Worldbank, Eurostat and the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions.
Within these loosely defined research themes, a specific PhD project will be defined in cooperation between the PhD researcher and the supervisor, matching the interests and skills of the researcher. Applicants are invited to write a three-page research proposal which, if selected, can be the basis of the research for the PhD thesis.

Tasks

  • Conducting research, writing a dissertation and other publications
  • Teaching in the field of social sciences for at least 10% of the time
  • Participating in the AISSR PhD programme, including following courses
  • Participating in conferences and seminars

Requirements

  • Completed Master's degree in Sociology or another related Social Science
  • Selection will be based on the quality of research plan and CV

Further information

Further enquiries can be obtained from Prof. Jelle Visser (jelle.visser@uva.nl).

Job application

The starting date for the project should be between 1 November 2010 and 1 February 2011.
Application requirements: a letter explaining interest and commitment, a three-page research proposal (including operationalized resarch questions, theoretical framework, research method, and considerations on selection of the empirical object), a complete CV, two letters of recommendation, a list with subjects taken and obtained grades during university education.
Applicants should send their full application before 22 October 2010, by email to: application-soca-fmg@uva.nl

(France) as for january 2011 to work on a project coordinated by Antoine Depaulis

(antoine.depaulis@ujf-grenoble.fr) untitled : “Do cortical astrocytes play a role in the

occurrence of absence epilepsy ? A calcium imaging and two photon microscopy approach

in a genetic rat model”.

The objective of the project is to determine whether absence epilepsy is associated with

the development of an anomaly of the cortical glial network and/or a dysfunction of

neuron-glial relationships during cortical maturation.

The program is developed in collaboration with 4 teams including neurobiologists

specialized in epilepsy and calcium imaging (I Guillemain and M Albrieux) and physicists

specialized in two-photon imaging (JC Vial and B Van der Sanden).

The candidate will focus on experiments that will determine the functional aspects of the

glial network and its relationship with the neural network by measuring spontaneous and

induced calcium movements and cell synchrony on cortical slices of epileptic rat pups and

controls of the same age. The implication of neuro- and glio-transmission in the observed

events will be studied using specific pharmacological tools.

Key words : epileptogenesis, glial network, calcium imaging, neuron-glia relationship,

brain slices, in vivo recording.

Techniques

Calcium imaging in brain slice or in vivo. Confocal or two-photon microscopy

Conditions

Start date : january 2011

Duration : 2 years

Funding : ANR grant (around 26000 euros /year)
