School of Engineering and Applied Science PhD Studentship

Carbon-based nanostructures for clean energy systems

Applications are invited for a three- year PhD studentship, supported by the School of Engineering and Applied Science of Aston University to be undertaken within Electronic Engineering Department at Aston University. The successful applicant will join an established experimental group working on Carbon-based nanoelectronics.

The position is available to start on 1 July 2009

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

For home/EU students, the studentship will cover home tuition fee plus EPSRC standard maintenance at £12,940 per year over 3 years.

For overseas students, the studentship will cover overseas tuition fee plus a reduced maintenance at £10,000 per year over 3 years.

BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT

The project is to build upon Aston’s existing expertise in synthesizing, engineering, and functionalizing carbon-based nanomaterials (such as diamond, nanocrystalline diamond, fullerene and carbon nanotubes) to develop high performance novel carbon-based nanostructures for clean energy systems, particularly as hydrogen storage media, fuel cell electrodes, and CO2 sorbents. The project will involve collaborations with University College London.

DEADLINE

Closing date for applications: 26 April 2009
